Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"As its name suggests, the band Toys'R'Noise made its music with toys and handmade instruments. Regarding the philosophy of the project, a comparison could be drawn between the band and Chapi Chapo but in fact the conception of the music is more adventurous (intellectuals would call it "free"). Indeed, it is outside the box and finds its roots in the ambient industrial electro. A camouflaged disc par excellence, Toys'r'noise often navigates in the ambient and the down-tempo and sometimes the music goes louder but without becoming hard. Sometimes, Toys'r'noise takes a magic and hypnotic form in the way of Masters Musicians Of Bukkake, Kiss The Anus Of A Black Car or the Swans."-Atypeek Music

Harker, Nina
Nina Harker [VINYL]
(BeCoq)
Unusual approaches to rock song and instrumentals from this French duo of Apolline Schöser & Nocola Henry in collaboration with Valentine Noiret, Daniel Dariel on Japanese vocals, Louis Claus on Indian flute and Marie-Laure Gucciardi for poetic writing in Italian, &c.; peculiar and compelling, somehow reminiscent of Etron Fou...
Teube
Teube [CASSETTE]
(BeCoq)
Strange environments of sound from the French trio of Simon Le Vigouroux on double bass, Cyril Noël on electronics and Thomas Coquelet on electronics, in two morphing works connected by name through each side of the cassette, expeditions guided by murky rythmic elements and mutated field recordings, surrounded by rich and darkly tinged sonic elements.
Gross, Jean-Philippe / Golden Oriole
Optical Cadillac / Golden Oriole [VINYL 10-inch]
(BeCoq)
A split 10" vinyl album of two very different works: first French sound artist Jean-Philippe Gross in a sonic assault of garish rhythmic electronic persistence and noise; then the Golden Oriole instrumental rock duo of Kristoffer Riis on guitar and Thore Warland on drums in a compelling work of grooving structure with diverse percussive interaction.
Marhaug, Lasse
Void [7" VINYL]
(BeCoq)
Two dark works of sound creating a mysterious chasm of drones, pulsations, electronic stretches, and mysterious percussive engines, a strange pair of recordings that definitely fit the title of this 7" record from Norwegian sound experimenter Lasse Marhaug.
Loubatiere / Warnecke
Couleurs Chimeriques
(BeCoq)
An album of rich aural environments contrasted with clamorous action and disintegrating sound from the duo of French percussionist Rodolphe Loubatiere performing on snare drum and Berlin-based sound sculptor Pierce Warnecke, their second album as a duo presenting a sophisticated and diverse set of compositions that both entrance and disrupt their listeners.
La Baracande
La Baracande
(BeCoq)
The third album from the French/Belgium La Baracande, with vocalist/violinist Basile Bremaud leading a quartet of violin, guitar, lap steel, pedal board, bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, and drone, singing long form ballads of epic tales of life and love that they describe as speaking with a voice to the living and our ghosts.
Lunar Error
Selene
(BeCoq)
A rich and building improvisation from this French 10 piece ensemble, using 4 reeds, piano, zither, gangsa gantung, Indian harmonium, harmonium, mixing desk, contact microphones, banjo, objects, electric & acoustic guitars, effects, gong and drums to create a expansive audio universe that owes its sound to free improvisation and Ligeti.
Yes Deer
Get Your Glitter Jacket [VINYL]
(BeCoq)
The Norwegian & Danish freejazz-noise-rock trio Yes Deer of Anders Vestergaard on drums, Karl Bjora on guitar and Signe Dahlgreen on sax, in their second album of high energy, cacophonous and brutally joyful (they say "enthusiastic despair") collective improvisation.
Mendoza, Ava / Maxime Petit / Will Guthrie
[7-inch VINYL]
(BeCoq)
An excellent instrumental 7-inch from the trio of Ava Mendoza on guitar, Maxime Petit on bass and Will Guthrie on drums, recording in the studio in France, four rocking pieces showing the band's chops, quirky asides, and aggressive yet clean playing style.
Bi-Ki?
Quelque Chose Au Milieu
(BeCoq)
The alto sax duet of Jean-Baptiste Rubin and Sakina Abdou sculpt sound material that draws on the acoustic resources of the space within which they play, captured here in various locations in Northern France by the keen ear of saxophonist/conceptualist Jean-Luc Guionnet.
Poulsen, Hasse / Tom Rainey
Open Fist
(BeCoq)
New York Drummer Tom Rainey met French guitarist Hasse Poulsen to record this album of dynamic duos in the studio, building works that ebb and flow between aggressive sound and reflective harmony, an impressive display of technical, lyrical, and powerful playing.
Guionnet, Jean-Luc / Thomas Bonvalet
Loges De Souffle
(BeCoq)
Thomas Bonvalet takes the banjo into unusual territory with Jean-Luc Guionnet performing on the organ at the protestant temple of Bergerac, France, in a beautifully terrifying album recorded during the MONC cultural arts centre's festival of avant-garde culture in 2010.

Morris, Joe
Instantiation: Versioning

Mattrey, Joanna
Veiled
(Relative Pitch)
The first solo record for NY violist Joanna Mattrey, performing also on the Stroh violin, in a deep exploration of the sound possibilities for both instruments, using preparations to alter the resonance of the viola, masking its overtly singing and beautiful nature and allowing for unexpected and unusual textures which weave around melodic lines; unique and fascinating.

Plant 3 [VINYL]

Grids
(Shhpuma)
Bringing together NY drummer/percussionist John Hollenbeck, also on prepared piano, with Berlin bassist Bernhard Meyer for an album that blends textural rock, electronic and jazz approaches in 9 elusively calm yet structurally turbulent pieces, using complex systems of cross rhythms against atmospheric immersion, occasionally disruptive but generally eccentrically controlled and exploratory.
Toned (Corder / Suarez / Weeks)
The Private Sector
(Shhpuma)
Schizophrenically skronky improv of ea-cutups and semi-maniacal segments that resolve to near-stillness from the West Coast TONED trio of Nathan Corder on electronics, Leo Suarez on drums, and Tom Weeks on sax, using a nonlinear and nonhierarchical organizational process and multiple layers of compositional feedback loops to create unpredictably bizarre and overtly fun music.
Lopes, Luis Humanization 4Tet (w/ Amado / Gonzalez / Gonzalez)
Believe, Believe
(Clean Feed)
Energetic and assertive jazzcore improv from Portuguese guitarist Luis Lopes' long-running Humanization 4Tet with saxophonist Rodrigo Amado and the near-telepathic rhythm section of Aaron Gonzalez on double bass and Stefan Gonzalez on drums, in an album recorded in the studio in front of an audience in New Orleans during their 2018 tour, finding the band in formidable form.
Testa, Carl
Sway Prototypes - Volume 3
(Sway)
The third volume of NY bassist, composer, and electronic/computer musician Carl Testa's amazing Sway project, giving an interactive electronic processor its own voice interfacing with any size ensemble, here with two new works--one for quintet among a set of Chicago improvisers, the other in Portland, Maine with a sextet--each uniquely voiced and excitingly unpredictable.
