"Two of the true greats of British Jazz and Improvised music unite in a new Quartet. The idea for this band came about when John invited Paul to join him and the rest of Soft Machine for the London Benefit for Keith Tippett last Summer and the two had such fun playing together again that they decided to make plans to go into the studio to record. This idea quickly evolved into plans to play live with the superb drummer / percussionist Mark Sanders and the brilliant Double Bass and Trumpet player Percy Pursglove coming onboard. This is a serious quartet.
John Etheridge and Paul Dunmall are both known as serial collaborators working with a multitude of different musicians across a myriad of genres, ignoring artificial musical boundaries. The pair have known each other for many years, they were both members of Danny Thompson's Whatever in the late eighties and both worked with and were close friends of Elton Dean but this the first time they have led a band together.Tonight's gig is a real scoop for Fringe Jazz - don't miss it.
JOHN ETHERIDGE rightly enjoys a glowing reputation throughout the jazz world and beyond and has been described by Pat Metheny as "One of the best guitarists in the world". He is a prodigiously gifted and creative player whose approach to music can only be described as 'eclectic' as he refuses to accommodate or even acknowledge artificial musical boundaries. His range is well illustrated by his years of touring and recording with the iconic Stephane Grappelli while simultaneously doing likewise with the legendary jazz-fusion group, The Soft Machine. John is equally at home on acoustic and electric guitar and his willingness to engage with so many styles is matched by his ability to excel in any of them. He has played with Soft Machine, John Williams, Yehudi Menuhin, Dizzie Gillespie, Herb Ellis, Pat Metheny, Birelli Lagrene, Barney Kessel, Arild Andersen, Elton Dean, Alan Skidmore, Danny Thompson, Chris Garrick, Didier Lockwood, Ric Sanders, John Stevens, Andy Summers, Vimala Rowe, Nigel Kennedy and countless others.
PAUL DUNMALL - widely recognised as one of the most talented reed players on the International jazz/improvised music scene. Whether playing in small groups or big bands his musical sensitivity and imagination combined with a powerful sound drenched in both Jazz and Folk traditions make him one of the most distinctive improvisers playing today. He has performed with Alice Coltrane, Rashied Ali, Andrew Cyrille, Henry Grimes, Elton Dean, Evan Parker, Alan Skidmore, Keith Tippett, Mujician, Johnny Guitar Watson, Paul Rogers, Danny Thompson, LJCO, Hamid Drake, Chris Corsano, Andy Sheppard, Spirit Level and many more..."-Bristol Fringe Club event listing
