Duerinckx, Jean-Jacques / Anatole Damien : Dry / Wet (FMR)

A duo of Brussels audio explorers, Jean-Jacques Duerinckx on sopranino saxophone and Anatole Damien on tabletop guitar and electronics, contrasting acoustic "dry" and highly effected "wet" sounds, the two develop sonic environments that build and release using unusual reed techniques and mutated string scrabbling in a strangely compelling set of dialogs.

Artist Biographies

"Jean-Jacques Duerinckx: Saxophonist, sound artist and performer, composer, improviser

Practicing mainly the sopranino and baritone saxophones, and first influenced by Steve Lacy, Antonny Braxton, John Surman, Hamiet Bluiett; his meetings with saxophonists Lol Coxhill and later Michel Doneda were finally decisive - guiding his playing to a world where material sound and abstract melodies coexist and intermingle.Always been sensitive to the visual arts, he is interested in electro-acoustic music, sound art and particularly to "soundscapes".Influenced by R. Murray Schafer, he collaborates with other forms of artistic expression by contribution with the unique color of his instrument's own rare vocal qualities which he also uses for his sound creations.

His idea of using the sound material of the instrument as energy vector forms one of the cornerstones of his artistic expression.Instrumentalist, working mainly sound, breath, multiphonics tunes, the richness of the tones and modes of contemporary plays; being intuitive he strives to evolve in a world where the sound materialises while finding its inspiration. He played together with many renowned musicians of the world of free improvised music such as
Lol Coxhill
John Russell
Paul Rutherford
Jim Denley
Jacques Foschia
Peter Jacquemyn
Tatsuya Nakatani
Pascal Marzan
Adam Bohman
Roger Turner
Dan Warburton
Sabu Toyozumi
Phil Wachsmann
Martin Klapper ... for just naming a few.

He is convinced of the richness of exchange between artists of all modes of expression and cares for conveying his passion for all sort of sound phenomenona.Contrasting his work with other modes of expression where freedom, exchange, energy, presence, letting go are the key principles; in parallel he researches in transdisciplinary manner to confront his sound expertise with other modes of artistic expression such as visual arts, performance, contemporary dance by collaborating with for example Harold Schellinx, Patricia Kuypers, Frank Baubois, Pascale Gille, Isako Horikawa, Peter M Friess.

He also organises workshops for sound expression by bringing together musicians and sound artists and is very active in the baritone saxophone experimental rock music scene in Brussels and elsewhere.

In March 2011, he founded with cellist Matthieu Safatly: ONE MOMENT FREE IMPROV ! - a flexible form dedicated to free improvisation and promoting the encounter between artists."
