Artist Biographies:

"Joachim Badenhorst (°1981 Antwerp) has been active in the experimental and improvised music scene in Europe and abroad for the past 15 years. Following his master degree in jazz studies at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague, he has since divided his time between Belgium and cities in the US and Europe, collaborating and recording with jazz and experimental music ensembles and artists, such as Han Bennink, Tony Malaby and Noël Akchoté while incessantly exploring the visceral elements of sound. His output ranges from solo improvisation to leading large formations, such as his own Carate Urio Orchestra.

Badenhorst is artistically interested in integrating ideas from various different art medias into his musical compositions. He also takes deep interest in revealing the inherent relation between contemporary and traditional musics, having collaborated with traditional musicians from Turkey and Japan, and toured in China with reinterpreted traditional Chinese music.

In recent years, Badenhorst is contemplating the evanescent site specificity of sound as well as the relation between space and sound. In recent years, his work has taken a deeper focus on composition, namely that of computerbased composition and processing. Through continual research and experiment, he delves into a reimagination of the boundaries between improvisation and composition, of abstract sound explorations and harmonic passage, and continues to attempt at a personal aesthetic language that interact with spaces and engage with different audiences.

Badenhorst appears on over 50 cd's on over 10 record labels. In 2012, he launched his own label KLEIN, as a creative platform to initiate collaborations, experiment and play with unconventional design, and as an outlet for fringe musical projects.

Since 2010 Badenhorst has been developing his solo programme consisting of improvisations and compositions for solo acoustic and electroacoustic wind instruments."

C.B.G (Celano/Baggiani Group)

This group has meanwhile released 6 CDs already: Michael Moore on alt sax and clarinet, Sven Schuster on Double bass and Marcos Baggiani on drums. On the last two CDs Nothing changes (2008) and Alienology (2010) by Trytone Records Gorka Benitez joins the band with tenor sax.

In october 2011 the band expanded the line up to a sextet for the tour in Holland. The quartet teamed up with tenorist Ellery Eskelin and pianist Sylvie Courvoisier.

In 2012 the band has taken a new form and will be working in quartet with some wonderful young musicians: Joachim Badenhorst on tenor sax, clarinet and bass clarinet and with Clemens van der Feen on double bass. In 2015 the 5th album of the band came out by Trytone records."

"Marcos Baggiani: Iam a musician, drummer, composer and producer. I was born in Buenos Aires, 1973. It was from this place that I begun playing drums. In 2001 I moved to Amsterdam to study at the Conservatory, gaining an MA in Jazz. Since then I live and evolve in Amsterdam, a world wide known hot spot of the improv music scene.

I've been twice convened for International projects representing the Dutch arts: "Jazz Plays Europe 2009" & "Take 5 Europe II 2013".

In 2004 (and until 2006) I've created and curated -together with dancer Valeria Primost- The Meeting Point, a music&dance laboratory that run monthly at Bimhuis; what today functions as Monday Match.

Between 2006 and 2012 I have curated the Trytone Fest at Zaal 100.Trytone is musicians' collective and record label, I'm one of its artistic leaders.

I would like to mention some of my present projects, please check these and more in this web page under BANDS.

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"In 2013 and specially for the Composition Assignment of the North Sea Jazz Festival, they came forth with a new line up of this band, one of the musicians being the Belgium clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst, mentor of the Carate Urio Orchestra and part of bands like Moogil, Tony Malaby's novela and Baloni. This trio is a derivation of that partnership, committed to open new musical spaces in a more intimate context, re-imagining the boundaries between composition and improvisation and between conventional harmony and abstract sound explorations. "Lili and Marleen" is a marvellous accomplishment of this non-exclusivist approach; melody, groove and textural / timbral work co-existing without preconceptions of any sort. The Argentinean roots of both Baggiani and Celano can be sensed here and there; an amalgam of postmodern creative music with traces of nuevo tango and chacarera. This is the kind of mix that someone like Badenhorst would appreciate, always searching for the maximum aesthetic elasticity and for cross-current audiences."-Clean Feed
