"Johnny DeBlase is a bassist and composer from New York City. He splits much of his musical time pushing the boundaries of avant-rock and free jazz as a member of the guitar trios Many Arms and Zevious. He also leads his own quartet and composes an eclectic mix of chamber and electronic music. Johnny has toured the US and Canada extensively and has released albums on Tzadik, Cuneiform Records, Engine-ESP, Majmua Music, and Abandon Ship Records."

"Born in San Diego, CA and raised in Sacramento, Ches Smith came up in a scene of punks and metal musicians who were listening to and experimenting with jazz and free improvisation. He studied philosophy at the University of Oregon before relocating to the San Francisco Bay area in 1995. After a few years of playing with obscure bands and intensive study with drummer / educator Peter Magadini, he enrolled in the graduate program at Mills College in Oakland at the suggestion of percussionist William Winant. There he studied percussion, improvisation, and composition with Winant, Fred Frith, Pauline Oliveros and Alvin Curran. One of Winant's first "assignments" for Ches was to sub in his touring gig at the time, Mr. Bungle (here he met bassist / composer Trevor Dunn who would later hire him for the second incarnation of his Trio-Convulsant). During his time at Mills, Ches co-founded two bands: Theory of Ruin (with Fudgetunnel / Nailbomb frontman Alex Newport), and Good for Cows (w/ Nels Cline Singers' Devin Hoff). He currently performs and records with Xiu Xiu, and Secret Chiefs 3. He has also performed with Ben Goldberg, Annie Gosfield, Wadada Leo Smith, John Tchicai, Fred Frith, and Trevor Dunn. In addition to Ceramic Dog, he also leads his two of his own projects, Congs for Brums and These Arches. He currently spends his time between Los Angeles, San Francisco and Brooklyn."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"At the intersection of jazz and rock, guitarist and composer Nick Millevoi aligns himself with the aesthetics promoted by John Zorn's Tzadik label (the one behind his work with the band Many Arms), the psychedelic Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band, as well as by a dozen or so other genre-leaping collaborations. Millevoi assembles musicians like Jamie Saft, Johnny DeBlase, Ches Smith, Dan Blacksberg and June Bender for a record that summons the folk, country, and blues roots of present day American music.

But, if in Desertion the music is presented with the positive affirmation of a statement, Millevoi arrives there in unpredictable ways, and that is what makes this release so compelling. Alternative tunings of the guitars, unusual manipulations of the effect pedals, (added a comma) and a careful management of feedback turn the six songs here into a musical journey that rewards listeners with the surprise of discovery. A flux of retro-futuristic situations and an ever-present Hammond organ create a patina on this music, referencing the past without being nostalgic.

Is this getting back to the basics? Without a doubt, but resulting in something very different from what was done before. It's almost like Neil Young brought Crazy Horse and all of his Downtown NY friends with him to do a new version of the Dead Man soundtrack in 2016. Unmissable."-Shhpuma
