![]() "Three violin and cello improvisations recorded in a church bell tower. Luke Pagarani's sleeve notes point out that the separation from a traditional concert or recording space means that "neither Hackney nor tradition pause respectfully for art to commence". Indeed, the first things we hear are the mechanisms and chimes of the bell tower, its rhythmic pattern offering a springboard for the fluent, sparkling improvisations that follow. Allum and Kanngiesser are both key contributors to the most recent generation of musicians associated with Eddie Prévost's weekly improvisation workshops, and the expected focus on the materials to hand and how they can be moulded comes to the fore. Vibrant, twisting streams of string intertwine, converse and argue with each other, dipping away to reveal the tick of the clock and the sound of traffic outside as the three tracks are recorded in different rooms of the tower and at different degrees of remove from the city."-Richard Pinnell, The Wire ![]() The Squid's Ear! ![]() Improvised Music Free Improvisation London & UK Improv & Related Scenes Matchless Stringed Instruments Duo Recordings |
