TLASILA lyrics:

What can you bench? The lie of penury.

Who are your heroes? Enclosed space, blank canvas.

The actual books or the audio versions? All this talk of taverns makes me yearn for sand.

Do you remember learning to cycle? Horses had to be pulled.

What sorts of music are most popular for therapeutic purposes? Depressed keys produced no sound.

Behold, the one true sarcoma, To Live and Shave in L.A.! What incisive analyses might one parse from their extraordinary reign of failure? Are there epidemiological verities to be pried from the sludge? Why should anyone care about anything they did? WHY?

Because of their commitment to a particularly inflexible strain of aestheticism. They were beyond adamantine. There was no hermeneutic metric for the maleficent slab that was To Live and Shave in L.A.

They refused.

"Genre is obsolete!" maintained their founder and leader, Tom Smith. Sound for his imperious, peremptory, fantastically arrogant cabal was no lustrous totem of antiquity; the notion of artistic "authenticity" itself was branded as mere sentimentality, a woeful expedience. Theirs was not a music of comfort. The ultimate goal of To Live and Shave in L.A. was the null set - the unnegotiable precipice.

Simply writ, TLASILA was a transcendent cultural critique. Smith loathed as few have dared. (No misanthropist, he - his intolerance was reserved for the edifice.) The apogee? Works of unparalleled, unapproachable complexity, high-water marks of fractured acoustics and convulsive, hyper-literate declamation - their metier was hysteria; revulsion as pharaoric talisman. And, of course, they often failed.

Facts:

To Live and Shave in L.A. was begun by Tom Smith in May 1990 in Adel, Georgia, USA. (Other, conflicting dates abound on the Internet, but May 1990 is the definitive moment of conception.)

The initial TLASILA demos (tracked through July '90) established a rough template for all that was to follow.

More professional recording and conceptual fine-tuning (1991- 1992) accelerated the process.

By March of 1993, live performances - exceedingly chaotic, poorly attended affairs - commenced.

The earliest of these featured Smith performing solo, armed only with a cassette deck and a sheathe of hand-scrawled texts.

(The majority of the post-demo, 1991-1993 sessions and performances were undertaken using the Peach of Immortality name, owing to a contractual agreement Smith had entered into with ne'er-do-well logo Noiseville. They bare no resemblance to POI proper (1984-1989), however, and no "Miami POI" recordings were ever issued. All were released as TLASILA recordings. When Noiseville went bankrupt in September 1993, Smith reverted to the TLASILA name.)

The first members of TLASILA were friends from Miami Beach - Rachel "Lady Tigra" Derougement, erstwhile member of Miami Bass-inflected pop-rap duo L'Trimm, budding filmmaker Oscar Perez, and party scene habitue Tracie Phillips.

(This quartet, accompanied by Smith's fiancee, Angela Terrell, collaborated with legendary sexploitation director Doris Wishman in 1993 on the "Spatters of a Royal Sperm" video.)

By the late autumn of 1993, Frank "Rat Bastard" Falestra, who more often than not could be found ensconced behind the mixing board at Churchill's, the sleazy breeding ground where To Live and Shave in L.A., Harry Pussy, and a motley fistful of other artists aired their neuroses, slowly joined forces with Smith.

Bastard recorded dozens of early TLASILA performances; by the end of the year, he had joined the group.

Smith's marriage in November 1993 provided the nascent ensemble a period of respite.

During the break, TLASILA's debut album, "30-minuten männercreme," was assembled.

It was issued on Smith's Love Is Sharing Pharmaceuticals imprint in July 1994.

Electronics wunderkind Ben Wolcott came aboard in late summer of '94.

Many other recordings, performances and tours followed.

By 1996, the group, now a burgeoning collective, ventured into Europe for a series of feral, heretical, often wholly shambolic performances, primarily witnessed by displeased bartenders and rough gangs of noise enthusiasts.

TLASILA's 1999 "free-glam" trek across the USA attracted a tremendous amount of attention, cementing the reputation of the ensemble (for both good and ill).

In 2000, after an unprecedentedly demonic performance in Brooklyn, the group sundered.

While Smith retreated to his Western Blot studio assemble a final mix of "The Wigmaker in Eighteenth-Century Williamsburg" album, a plague of TLASILA spin-off groups appeared: there were two TLASILA 2 ensembles, a TLASILA 3, TLASILA 1975, I Live in L.A., Born in East L.A., and possibly others.

By the time the clone contagion passed, Smith had moved to Switzerland to begin rehearsals for Ohne, the group he'd co-founded with neo-Aktionist multi-hyphenate Dave Phillips in the meantime.

Before Ohne's extensive tour of Eastern and Central Europe took place, TLASILA's "The Wigmaker" was released to near-universal acclaim.

While Ohne was on hiatus, Smith and Bastard reconvened TLASILA.

In 2004 they returned to live action in the USA, headlining the final night of the very first No Fun Fest.

Later in that same year, the expanded lineup, featuring Andrew W.K., Sightings' Mark Morgan, producer Don Fleming, and the trio of Wolcott, Falestra, and Smith, traveled throughout the States.

The "Noon and Eternity" album was recorded after the tour at Sonic Youth's NYC studio, and featured new Shave recruit Thurston Moore.

Thus engorged with star power, TLASILA headlined Washington DC's "Noise Against Fascism" festival in January 2005.

Tours in 2006 and 2007 followed, but Smith was tiring of the bombastic formula, and yearned for the aesthetic acuity exemplified by Ohne.

To Live and Shave in L.A.'s 2008 tour of Europe was its most stripped-down, challenging and abstract to date, introducing a new cast of performers, including Hungarian percussionist Balazs Pandi, American experimental sound artist Gaybomb, Belgian techno producer Sickboy Milkplus, and fellow Belgian performance artist Orphan Fairytale.

Early dates also saw Joke Lanz (aka Sudden Infant), joining TLASILA on stage and in the studio.

This lineup comprised the final live iteration of To Live and Shave in L.A.

Prior to the tour, work began on an ambitious "anti-remix remix" project, "The Grief That Shrieked to Multiply."

The album - intended as a mammoth, 240-minute piece and possible only through the incredible generosity and astonishing contributions of nearly 70 partner artists - was released via MonotypeRec.

In conclusion:

To Live and Shave in L.A. was an oppositional epiphany with an idiopathic antecedent (Ron Jeremy's enfeebled 1986 porn parody of William Friedkin's often bracing 1985 policier To Live and Die in L.A.). They promulgated convulsive textural involution, timbral degeneracy, and a monomaniacal attack against aesthetic and cultural assumptions (including, most reassuringly, their own). With TLASILA as his weapon, Tom Smith conveyed a hermetic hysteria that wrestled calamity from the pallidly profane. His texts were simultaneously abstruse and impious - a vertiginous conflation of recondite sleaze, Emil Cioran and Bonnie Rotten locked in a profoundly unsettling embrace. TLASILA was the perfect mix of high and low.

"I studied Electroacoustic music at the CNRR Conservatory where I specialised in multi-channelled diffusion (Acousmatic spatialisation) and Modular Synthesis. Using Buchla System 200, Serge 73/75 and a modified EMS Synthi A analog Synthesizers to create my "Electronic abstractions" and Plastic sound-objects.Sculpting sound like a craftsman, without restraint or sometimes "on the tip of the hands", I am interested in the importance of the compositional gesture, to favor the live touch without repetitions, by impulse, in a very corporeal way. VISCERALITY !

also play various instruments or devices, though most notably a Prepared Piano-Soundboard + an Electric Psalterion + Hackbrett Cymbalum + Guitars + turntables as well as Theremin + Soline and Roland Fantom G6 synths and computer to build up electronic layers, process acoustic and field recordings. On top of those, I like to move various glasses, pieces of wood, stones, or percussive objects, as well as taking advantage of vinyl material to fondle released sounds engraved on unique vinyls in order to manipulate them manually on stage.

Relying on electricity/amplification to produce, manipulate, work on sound-material, but trying my best to explore various genres and make sure that each of my albums differs from the previous one, trying to avoid routine and surprise my listeners.

Not musically trained/educated I lie outside the Classical genre but my scores incorporate traditional classical components in a predominantly unconventional manner which recently allowed me to being asked by Iancu Dumitrescu & Ana Maria Avram to join forces as a soloist in their Hyperion Ensemble + being invited by Jean-Paul Dessy (Musiques Nouvelles ensemble) and Raoul Lay (Ensemble Télémaque) to become in charge of electronics/turntables in their ambitious E. C. O. (European Chamber Orchestra) formation comprising of 33 soloists...

Fortunate enough to work with what people call a dream-team of collaborators: joining Lydia Lunch, Murcof, The European Contemporary Orchestra (E.C.O.), Mark Cunningham (MARS), Cindytalk, Orkest De Ereprijs, Audrey Chen, Mia Zabelka, Iancu Dumitrescu's Hyperion Ensemble, Stephen O'Malley, Yannick Barman, PAS or Faust onstage and-or in studio.

Besides I did some recordings with: Eugene Robinson (Oxbow), Edward Ka-Spel (Legendary Pink Dots), Simon Fisher Turner, Kumo, Scott McCloud (Girls Against Boys), Cosey Fanni Tutti (Throbbing Gristle), My Brightest Diamond, Sybarite, Foetus, Pantaleimon, Graham Lewis (Wire), Barry Adamson, Andy Diagram, Scanner, Machinefabriek, Mira Calix, Kammerflimmer Kollektief, Justin K. Broadrick, James Johnston (Gallon Drunk/Bad Seeds/Faust), ASVA, Jarboe, Jad Fair, Martin Dupont and many more...

I am also the founder (w/ Hervé Vincenti) of the international collective Strings Of Consciousness

A journalist for various magazines and radio DJ since 1983, as well as a musical activist, I have celebrated 35+ years of sharing/transmitting my musical passions.Since the early 2000s I have been introduced as a " musical travel agent " and been performing the world, playing festivals all over Europe, Russia, Poland, Canada, USA, Mexico, Australia & Asia... Feeling lucky to release on several international labels such as Oscillations, Aural Terrains, Opa-Loka, Southern UK, Monotype, Alrealon Musique, Beta Lactam Ring, Sub Rosa, HomeNormal, Important, HelloSquare, Public Eyesore, Utech, Staubgold, etc...(see the section "Friends/Collaborators" above in the Menu bar for a detailed list + links).

I like to perform in galleries or other atypical (non-musical) places and acts like a sonographer. Thus my sound-designs have been heard for various F.R.A.C. in France, and also internationally, most notably in MOMA (New York), MACBA (Barcelone), E_Werk/Transmediale (Berlin), Center for Contemporary Arts (Glasgow), Galerie Moderno (Leeds), Ars Electronica (Linz), Synch Festival (Athèns), Société des Arts Technologiques (Montréal), Recycl'ART (Bruxelles), "Transcultural Mapping" @ RIXC from Riga, "Numeris Causa" Biche de Bere Gallery (Paris), Sintesi (Citta Della Scienza - Naples), Arborescence (Aix-en-Provence), Instituto Cultural Poblano (Puebla - Mexico), Eléctron (Genève), Alfa Art Gallery (New-York), CocART - CSW (Torun - Pologne), M.A.K. (Vienne), Reina Sofia National Museum (Madrid), Borusan Center For Arts (Istanbul), Tranzit Art Gallery (Bucharest), or Art-O-Rama the rendez-vous for Contemporary Art in France...

I am aso the man behind the cult labels Pandemonium Rdz. and BiP_HOp."

"Weasel Walter (real name Walter Wyzowski) is a composer and instrumentalist who founded the band The Flying Luttenbachers in Chicago in 1991 with a current member of Cellular Chaos and Behold...The Arctopus. Over the years, The Flying Luttenbachers included noted Dylan Posa, and Michael Colligan, while creating a body of music drawing equally from no wave, death metal, gamelan, noise music, hardcore punk and modern classical. Walter moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003, where he formed the latest of many Luttenbachers lineups, remaining on percussion with the addition of bassist Mike Green (Burmese), and virtuoso guitarist Ed Rodriguez (ex-Colossamite, Gorge Trio). Singular guitar phenomenon Mick Barr (Krallice, Octis, Orthrelm) joined the group in 2005. The Flying Luttenbachers ceased to operate in late 2007. On November 25, 2009, Weasel Walter announced that he was moving to New York City to join the band Behold... The Arctopus on drums and will be writing "new, more extreme material from scratch." He also formed Cellular Chaos with Marc Edwards (drummer), Admiral Grey and Ceci Moss."

"Wouter Jaspers (Deurne, February 22, 1985) is a sound artist.

His work mainly consists of minimal soundscapes and drones for which he often experiments with effects equipment, modified synthesizers and contact microphones, where analog noise and field recordings form the basis of various melodic structures. Jaspers - then still stationed in Tilburg - played more than 400 times around the world between 2007 and the end of 2010, making it one of the most touring artists in the Dutch experimental music scene.

In 2007 at Vatican Analog released CD Babi Yar, an exploration includes a tribute to the victims of the massacre at Babi Yar in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1941. On the CD Exhibition, released in the spring of 2008, he translates field recordings he made in Ukraine, India, Poland and Germany into new compositions. For this CD he traveled to Theresienstadt, among other places, and used recordings from the radioactiveinfected area around Chernobyl.

His album Glorious Days was released in 2009, on which he collaborated with, among others, the lead singer of the Norwegian band Serena Maneesh, Emil Nikolaisen, who also worked as a producer and sound engineer on albums by the American band Woven Hand. To promote the album, Jaspers toured the United States, much of Europe and Asia.

In August 2010, Jaspers spent a week in the primeval forests around Brno, Czech Republic to work on a new album, which will be released in mid- April 2011 on his Vatican Analog record label. On September 27, 2010 he gave an artist workshop in Amsterdam at STEIM, institute for electronic music.

Besides his solo work, Jaspers is also active in other projects within and outside his noise collective Vatican Analog, such as in 4DALADIEZ, an experimental improv band with Vincent Koreman, Steffan de Turck, Bas Welling and Bas Verbeek. Together with De Turck he also forms the occasional duo Preliminary Saturation, he performs with Frans de Waard as Ezdanitoff and he performed with the Norwegian Sten Ove Toft with drone and noise project The Professional Skaters. He also collaborates with the American cellist Audrey Chen.

As an experimental musician, Jaspers developed a fascination for modifying analog equipment. For example, in 2010, together with technician and musician Christian Zollner, he set up the company Koma Elektronik, with which the duo started producing analog equipment for adventurous musicians from Berlin. The company now has a large group of employees and the products of the brand are sold all over the world. In 2016, the company also opened a workshop and shop in Berlin, Common Ground."

"C. Spencer Yeh was born in Taipei, Taiwan 1975, moved to the US in 1980; studied radio/television/film at Northwestern University, and is now based out of Cincinnati, Ohio. Yeh is active both as a solo and collaborative artist, as well as with his primary project, Burning Star Core. As an improviser, Yeh is focused on developing a personal vocabulary using violin, voice, and electronics. As a sound artist/composer, Yeh works with all aspects available surrounding a work, aurally and physically, as elements key to the cumulative experience. He is concerned not only with the sensual aspects of 'sound organization,' but the gestural qualities as well. Yeh has collaborated with a deep and ever-growing list of artists and groups, including Tony Conrad, New Humans with Vito Acconci, Evan Parker, Thurston Moore, Amy Granat with Jutta Koether, Justin Lieberman, Don Dietrich and Ben Hall (as The New Monuments), Prurient, and Jandek. He has performed at festivals and venues such as Sonar, FIMAV at Victoriaville, Frieze Arts Fair, No Fun Fest, High Zero, the 24 Hour Drone People at Fylkingen, The Kitchen, ZKM Karlsruhe, and has also exhibited visual art, sound, and video works internationally."

"Kevin Drumm is an experimental musician based in Chicago, United States

Emerging from the city's improvised music scene, in the 1990s he became one of the world's pre-eminent prepared guitar players. Since then his work has expanded to include electroacoustic compositions and live electronic music made with laptop computers and analog modular synthesizers. His early recordings contain mostly sparse, quiet sounds; recent works have been more loud and dense.

Drumm has collaborated with many artists working in similar fields, including Japanese guitarist Taku Sugimoto, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jim O'Rourke, and many European improvisers such as Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and German trumpeter Axel Dörner. He has also worked with the artist group Simparch, composing a piece for their installation Spec, shown at Documenta XI in Kassel, Germany and at the Renaissance Society in Chicago. Drumm has also worked with saxophonist Ken Vandermark's Territory Band, which brings together American and European players who work in both jazz and free improvisation.:
