Descriptions, Reviews, &c.
Ricardo Arias plays inflatable rubber balloons, which he refers to as ballloon kits. Many of these balloons are quite large with interesting resonant properites, to which he applies found objects such as sponges, sticks, rubber bands, etc. Arias writes large conceptual works for the balloons, here presenting three pieces of many movements: Latex Preludes; Caouchu: the weeping tree; Pieces for multiple balloons. He strokes, squeezes and strikes his balloons, which are miked to make a large and varied set of electro-acoustic sounds for fascinating results: from the thunderous to the most subtle of squeaks, unworldly sounds, synthetic noises that at times sounds more electronic than a lot of synthesizers. In the context of his larger works Arias makes the balloons tell a story, an excellent accomplishment and a great illustration of the diversification of instrumentation found in today's sonic explorers. Nicely packaged in a metal case with illustrated booklet.
