Artist Biographies:

"André is a Portuguese guitar player/composer/teacher who currently resides in Porto, Portugal.

André is in love with music in all of its forms and shapes. You can find him listening, playing and composing in a myriad of styles and he's loving and being emotionally touched by all of them. He's also in love with novelty and unpredictabilty. Hence his compositional style would be described as post-modernistic in the real sense of the term, drawing influences from many musical styles, defying art authority and cannons of what art should feel like, breaking the fourth wall and, being very clear in his love for the art, the music, and the amount of work he is willing to put into it to defend his artistic visions.

As a performer he considers himself to be under the big broad and more relaxed conception of the term Jazz. You can find him playing the American songbook in straight ahead post-bop jam sessions in Manhattan or exploring experimental music possibilities in festivals in Europe. Music is music and André is continuously searching for a strong beautiful connection between his musical inner-frame and the end result that the listener is receiving in the audience."

"Portuguese jazz bassist and composer André Carvalho is an active NYC freelancer whose works AllAboutJazz described as "both in bounds and out of this world." Nate Chinen of The New York Times dubbed Carvalho a bassist "you should get to know." André has played with Jazz stars Chris Cheek, Will Vinson, and Tommy Crane. And André's performance credits range from the Colors Jazz Festival (Paris), the Cairo Jazz Festival, and Jazz Festival Ljubliana, to venues such as Blue Note (New York), Konzerthaus Berlin, and Casa da Música (Porto).

Among the awards he has received are the "Carlos Paredes 2012" (a major annual prize that celebrates Portuguese music and culture) and the "Best Group" at Bucharest International Jazz Competition 2011. In addition, he has received multiple grants from the GDA Foundation to record ("Memória de Amiba") and to tour (2017 and 2019).

The scope of his work extends far beyond Jazz. With multi-Grammy award winner Gilberto Gil, André toured Europe performing his new opera "Prelúdio." The collaboration included Nova Ópera de Lisboa and the drumming ensemble Cortejo Afro, premiering portions of the new work in venues such as the Barbican Center (London) and Finlandia Talo (Helsinki). He has performed with classical conductors Gustavo Dudamel, Heinrich Schiff, and Franz Welser-Möst and collaborated with Fado singers Carlos do Carmo and Cristina Branco.

[...]

Mesmerised by Jazz, improvised music, and composition as a teenager, Andre's background was anything but traditional. descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Mt. Meru" is the second record under his own name by the guitarist of The Rite of Trio - one of the most brilliant projects coming from the small European country called Portugal. After his first record, The Guit Kune Do, which consisted of five electric guitars, he shuffles things around once again and presents us with a chamber music feeling, comprising instruments like cello, bassoon, bass clarinet and vibraphone and putting them side by side with his electric guitar, alto saxophone, double bass and drums. Andre B. Silva continues to devour different music genres and styles into a post-modernist jazz philosophy of his own, "defying art authority and cannons of what art should feel like". Novelty and unpredictability are assumed goals and nothing is put aside, be it Silva's love for melody, his vicious devotion for counterpoint or his punk-ish understanding of contemporary classical music and straight-ahead hard bop. One more step for his "eternal search for sounds, formations and solutions less explored" and one more challenge for us, listeners."-Clean Feed
