"After several years of studies in classical violin and literature, Catherine S Massicotte turned her musical practice upside down, switching from performer to improviser and sound artist. Cutting codes open, she favours the communicational aspect, the meeting, and the exchange. She aims for a less rational understanding of the instrument and its functions. She is involved in several projects and ensembles, including Tutu Combo, Minus 3, P.O.W.E.R., and Grand groupe régional d'improvisation libérée (GGRIL)."

"Eric Normand is an improviser, bassist, instrument designer, composer, songwriter, singer and record and concert producer. He defines himself as an epidisciplinary musician, a free electron driven by its yearning for meetings. As an improviser, he develop a personal and radical playing on a homemade electric bass equipped with mics and objects feedbacking and vibrating in small electronic devices, creating electric flux interrupted by the instrumental gesture. With this set, he prefer to play duets, with Jim Denley (flute and sax), Philippe Lauzier (bass clarinet and sax), Sébastien Cirotteau (trumpet), Pierre-Yves Martel (viola de gamba and electronic), Jean-Luc Guionnet (saxophone), in addition of several spontaneous encounters.

He also play in bands involved in a more specific musical genre as danced poetry with BABABA, instrumental theatre with Le Veau/ The Veal, songs with Les Pitounes and Éric Normand Chante and folk music with The Surruralits and RRRRoyal Canadian Free Form Folk Experience. Interested in collective creation and orchestral improvisation, he lead for seven years the GGRIL, a 15 pieces band that have worked with composers such as Evan Parker, Jean Derome, Robert Marcel Lepage and Michael Fischer. His music has been programmed by or performed in several festivals in Canada , Australia and Europe. It have also been broadcasted by Radio-Canada, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, CBC, Radio-Grenouille, and several college radio stations."

Patricia Ho-Yi Wang - violin: "Montrealer by birth, Quebecer at heart and now neo-Rimouskoise, Patricia Ho-Yi Wang is the brainchild of Cantonese parents who grew up in Madagascar. Trained in classical music in elementary and high school, then in jazz and popular music at CEGEP, she has since developed a passion for living heritage, the cornerstone of her interests and her artistic practice. For her, traditional music and the life stories of those who precede us deserve much more than the backward-looking attitude that is too often reserved for them, because they are social bond creators, fundamentally unifying and universal. VS'

In her artistic practice, Patricia seeks to open up reflection and dialogue on cultural identity, otherness and migration. To do this, she uses the rich material of traditional music and looks at her own realities as a woman and a visible minority resulting from immigration in order to highlight narratives that are not very present in current representations of the world, drawing in particular from its Cantonese roots and Malagasy family influence."

"Robin Servant [Rimouski, Canada] is a musician with a passion for traditional musics, improvisation, and composition. He has worked in many traditional ensembles (Trio Salicorne, Tord-Vis, la Baratte à Beurre, la Marée montante) and also in improvised music groups (GGRIL, duo Escarbilles, Brugir). He tries to make connections between popular traditions and contemporary musics. His work is organized around 2 axes: sharing the experience and experiencing the moment. With Du souffle et de l'espace, he explores the acoustics of the places he visits by making them vibrate with his accordion and electronics."

"As a musician, Rémy Bélanger de Beauport is first and foremost a free-improv cellist. He plays piano for ballet classes, electric bass, guitar and drums for rock bands and vocals in different contexts. As a mathematician, he has taught college-level math. He also organizes events and gets himself involved in many causes.

Originally from Québec City, Rémy's artistic practice as an experimental musician dates back to his teenage years. Influenced by Karlheinz Stockhausen and Nirvana, he publishes a first recording in 2003, with noise trio soda pop for a Déluge/Alterflow compilation. The same year, he releases an album as duo KL6 39E, on guitar, before switching over to the cello, starting the Fenaison trio with a first album on Ambiances Magnétiques in 2007.

Since then, he has been active in many long and short term projects: as a singer in Ensemble Partiel, he performs Stimmung, by Karlheinz Stockhausen; as a free-improv cellist, he plays in Le Veau / The Veal on Cuchabata Records (Faire l'amour aux banques, 2015) and is regularly invited to play one-off concerts. As the cellist in GGRIL (an improvisers' orchestra based in Rimouski, Québec) he is heard on Combines (Tour de bras, 2015) and has performed in France and Italy as part of a European tour in 2016. While living in Belring in 2015-2016, he formed string trio THUYA with bass player Klaus Kürvers and violinist Gerhard Uebele (Live @ the CLUB, Creative Sources Recordings, 2016) and joined the Berlin Improvisers' Orchestra. He has recently released a flexidisc Angenehmer Duft on Kohlenstoff Records and a solo album D'éclisses on Ambiances Magnétiques.

Rémy often works with dancers and choreographers, like Valerie Sabbah with whom he performs as Roméo & Juliette. He plays piano for ballet classes in various institutions such as L'École supérieure de ballet du Québec, L'École de danse de Québec and the Royal Academy of Dance, Berlin. For the Réseau d'enseignement de la danse, he composed and recorded, with percussionist Steve Hamel, music targeted for the teaching of Simonson Jazz dance in 2015.

Rémy has participated in several festivals as a free-improv cellist, Festival international de musique actuelle in Victoriaville, Francofolies in Montréal, Festival international de la littérature in Montréal, Festival des musiques de créations in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Rencontres de musiques spontanées in Rimouski, Kunst und Kultur Forum in Berlin.

Rémy graduated in composition and music theory at McGill University, in mathematics at Université du Québec à Montréal and participates in improvisation masterclasses, perhaps more notably with Jean Derome, Lori Freedman, Fred Frith, Tristan Honsinger and Joëlle Léandre. He has earned scholarships and awards from McGill University in 2003, 2009 and 2010, the Coup de cœur SuperMusique in 2008 with Quintette de l'Halloween and the Prix culturel Rimouskois, pour la relève in 2013."

"Tom Jacques: Multi-instrumentalist and sound artist

Tom Jacques is a multi-instrumentalist and sound artist. His work evolves between composition, improvisation, performance and sound device design, mainly in contemporary music, jazz, and percussion. For the last 5 years, he has been working with various artists and technicians in order to make his own musical instruments and sound installations. This approach allows him to explore unique musical universes that are unattainable with conventional instruments.

Tom Jacques stands out among Quebec's new breed of creative artists. Many of his personal projects and musical ensembles have been acknowledged and supported by the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec through its Bas-Saint-Laurent arts and literature program and its Bas-Saint-Laurent territorial partnership program . He is also supported by the Canada Council for the Arts , and is the recipient of the Bas-Saint-Laurent Best Newcomer Award.

Tom is the Artistic Director of the percussion trio Bascaille, a co-artistic director of the jazz quartet Manta, and a member of the GGRIL (Grand Groupe Régional d'Improvisation LIbre, which means "large regional free improvisation group". He regularly collaborates with artists of all stripes as a musician, composer, and consultant. In 2017, he exhibited a sound device entitled "Comment Où le Son" at a travelling exhibition of the organization Voir à l'Est, and a follow-up entitled "Trajet Pas Pareil" at the 2018 Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville (FIMAV).

This young artist is strongly involved in the cultural community. Currently president of Arte Tracto and director of Culture du Bas-Saint-Laurent, he helped set up Garage à musique de la Haute-Gaspésie, a pilot project inspired by Montréal's GAM, which uses music to help young people lessen the negative impacts of their harsh living conditions. The GAM's services are free."

"Isabelle Bozzini. Born Montréal, Québec, 1969. Performer (cello).

A passionate chamber player, cellist Isabelle Bozzini is dedicated to exploring two parallel worlds - new music of all kinds and music on period instruments. This endeavour continuously challenges her and nourishes her artistic aspirations.

She is a founding member of the Quatuor Bozzini which since its inception in 1999 has become one of Canada's leading string quartets on national and international scenes. Playing close to forty concerts per year, the Bozzinis produce their own concert series in Montréal including the Salon des compositeurs + Composer's Kitchen event. They tour several times per year in Europe, the US and Canada and have launched the label collection qb in the Fall of 2004 in collaboration with DAME. Isabelle Bozzini also works with Kore Ensemble, and various improvising artists such as Malcolm Goldstein, François Houle, Benoît Delbecq, Diane Labrosse and Jean Derome. Having collaborated for many years with Joël Thiffault and the Montréal Baroque Orchestra, Isabelle Bozzini now plays regularly with Ensemble Arion. She also plays with Idées Heureuses, Ensemble Caprice, the Studio de Musique Ancienne de Montréal, and French harpsichordist and conductor Hervé Niquet."

"Clemens Merkel's unconventional sound defines a new sensibility in contemporary music, through its intimate purity of tone, its settled understanding of microtonal or unconventional harmonic language, and its unhurried sensitivity. He is well known for innovative interpretations of Bach and John Cage, and is sought after by composers worldwide as an inspiration for new repertoire. His diverse collaborators range from the Wandelweiser collective to Montréal's Musique Actuelle community, and from emerging experimentalists to today's most revered composers.

For over a decade, Merkel's unusual sound has fused with that of the Quatuor Bozzini, considered one of the world's leading string quartets. Together they have mentored an entire generation of creators through the Composer's Kitchen; have released numerous critically acclaimed albums on their collection qb label; undertake multiple tours annually to be featured at festivals worldwide; and maintain a profound impact on the music scene across Canada and Europe in particular. They nourish Montréal audiences with unusual self-produced events that bridge worlds and cross boundaries of style, generation and culture.

Following an early career in Europe, where he contributed to the continent's leading ensembles, Merkel has made Montréal his home since 2000. He supports and advocates for new music in Québec and in Canada, and is regularly sought after as speaker, curator and adviser. His presence is felt in academia as well, through articles written for the Revue Circuit, and through his teaching at Concordia University. He's a passionate chef and lives in Montréal's Portuguese neighborhood together with his wife Isabelle Bozzini and children Félix and Béatrice."
