Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"We all have, on a shelf or in our head, a memory box. Sometimes we open it to add some trinket or idea, and we linger to take in hand certain relics, certain images, furtively or more prolonged, to meditate on them, to remember these traces of the past (memories, souvenirs).

This is a bit what Jac Berrocal offers us here in this last (and short) collection, whose title recalls another collection with a double title, Hôtel Hôtel.Bits of the past, sometimes quite distant, such as "R.A.S." or "Fruh in Berlin", voices, sounds captured incidentally in Minsk, Riga, Chisinau or Fürstentum ("Goum, goum, goum", "Ambasssade d'Angle"), borrowed from a previous opus ("Aristocrates"), or taken from the soundtrack of a film ("Inca d'enfance"). Boîte Boîte à souvenirs, completed by more contemporary, unpublished, sometimes deliciously ribald nuggets (mainly "Amarena"). A precious jewel box of heterogeneous and exciting sound deliriums.

Berrocal was also a member of Catalogue, along with Jean-François Pauvros and Gilbert Artman. This Assassins, whose blows we don't know where come from, and whose we don't even remember the moment they were dealt to us (in the 80s no doubt, unless it was in 2007 or 2008, when he was waking up in Brussels*), hits us with three particularly savage uppercuts that penetrate our flesh and cause lasting insomnia**: they are deadly.

More recently, a testimony of a little trip in 2020 to Denmark for the Sparkling Sound festival, which led Jac Berrocal and Vincent Epplay to play with veterans of the Danish scene (but should we say of the Spanish or even Catalan scene, since their discographic expression, in 1990, On Waste Ave-Nude, was published by the Spanish label G3G), Tzarina Q Cut, whose keyboardist/saxophonist Jakob Draminsky Hojmark was often present in the recordings of the Franco-Catalan Pascal Comelade. This meeting is divided into two parts, with in its second manifestation a sextet formula (septet in fact), Jakob Draminsky Hojmark swapping his keyboards with Per Buhl Acs for a sonic snare, joined by two vocalists, the performer Tanja Schlandet and the jazzwonan Randi Pontoppidan. And indeed it sparkles, but not like a watered-down soda like hard seltzer, the intoxication is claimed. The listener plunges into a deafening synthetic delirium, especially during the performance of October 9 with its hallucinated voices."-Fou Records (translated by Google)

"Randi Pontoppidan is a recognized and sought after singer, improviser and composer. She works live with loop machines and other electronic devices. She uses her voice exploring musical landscapes and bringing forth new sounds. The voice becomes the instrument. From free improvisation, free jazz, to contemporary music, Pontoppidan has over the years developed extremely extended singing techniques. She has been likened to Diamanda Galás and Maja S. K. Ratkje.

Member of the vocal quintet ensemble IKI and the collective Damkapellet.

The duo Event Horizon - Greg Cohen and Randi Pontoppidan takes on the bold challenge of making improvised music with voice, electronic and double bass. The love of sculpting sounds, melodies and pulses, makes this duo a visceral and buoyant soundscape. This experiment resulted in a dynamic duo recording Space Geode out on Chant Records 2018

The vocal/electric duo Randi Pontoppidan and Sissel Vera Pettersen - is an experimental, improvising and imaginative mini-ensemble that sets its sights on guiding the sound of the voice into sonic worlds, which has never been penetrated before. The use of loop machines and live manipulation of the voice make the sound landscapes vary from the entirely near and intimately acoustic sound to a world of "ambient" sound and polyrhythmic beats. New Album INNER LIFT, nominated as best album 2021 at Danish Music Award-jazz.

Randi Pontoppidan sings contemporary music as well touring around the world with Paul Hillier's ensemble Theatre of Voices performing the works of Steve Reich, David Lang, Stockhausen, Cage and Berio. She has worked with the trio Other Gardens, (Linda Edsjö, perc. and Jennifer Dill, flute) since 2010. CD out 2015 including pieces by Steingrimur Rohloff, Hans Henrik Nordstrøm and Juliana Hudkinson.

Randi Pontoppidan collaborates with the poet and soundmaker Morten Søndergaard with whom she was invited by the Egyptian/Danish Dialog Institute in 2011 to work with local musicians in the Siwa oasis in Egypt. Music and poetry concerts around europe.

Performed and worked with, among others: Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Thomas Buckner, Joëlle Léandre, Thomas Agergaard, Johanna Sulkunen, Simon Toldam, Jørgen Leth, Christian Rønn, Jakob Davidsen, Louise Hindsgavl, Lotte Anker, Martin Fabricius, Simon Christensen, Stuart Lynch, Makiko Hirabayashi, Soma Allpass, Anders Børup, Dalia Faitelson and Mat Maneri.

Randi Pontoppidan has appeared on festivals around the world with her own compositions and with the music of Stockhausen, Cage and Reich, on venues including Carnegie Hall, London's Royal Albert Hall, Mexico's Cervantino, Colombia´s Conciertos Biblioteca Luis Angel in Bogotá, Australian Perth and Berlin's Festspiele.

Randi Pontoppidan graduated from The Hague´s Royal Music Conservatory in jazz vocal technique and minoring in classical singing in 2000. She is teaching at RMC Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. Over the years she got supported by DJBFA, DMF, DKF, KODA and received grants from the Danish Art Foundation in 2007, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022."

"Vincent EPPLAY is a musician/plastic artist who has been developing since the beginning of the 90s a work of experimentation based on a practice inseparable from visual arts and music.

His work proposes listening situations through the creation of sound and visual immersion paths or spaces.

These devices have been shown in numerous art centres in France and Europe: "Jukebox for untitled music" (Palais de Tokyo), "Cabine d'Žcoute" (Centre Georges Pompidou, KW Berlin), "Station des ondes" (Le 104 Paris, Institut franais Maroc Essaouira), "No descriptive method" (le Dojo, Nice, Le temps de l'Žcoute Centre d'art de la Villa Arson; "Unholy Copy" (Haus, Nantes), etc.), "No descriptive mŽthode" (le Dojo, Nice, Le temps de l'Žcoute Centre d'art de la Villa Arson), "No descriptive mŽthode" (le Dojo, Nice, Le temps de l'Žcoute Centre d'art de la Villa Arson; "Unholy Copy" (Haus, Nantes), etc.).

He regularly performs in solo or group concerts, notably with Jac Berrocal, David Fenech, Sayoko Papillon, Bader Motor. He makes films with enigmatic titles such as MnŽmotechnie, Ateliers des sons & expressions spontanŽes Xenoglossie Radio, Le Club des Animistes - films presented either as part of installations, or screened during solo concerts or with guest musicians.

His numerous discography has been published by different labels: Blackest Ever Black, AKA, LDDR, Planam, Grautag record... and continues to archive records without music, 8 mn films of pedagogical methods and teaching, and recordings without proven authorship.
