After releases comprised of contact-mic torture or synthesizer yaw, Kelley returns to the trumpet for this solo outing. Well, mostly. Bringing along a distortion pedal to the session, "just in case", He did end up using said device and it makes his horn sound even more alien. Check out the annoying mosquito that shows up midway through "Stimulus Check", as it gradually becomes engulfed in a sea of distortion and then disappears altogether in what sounds like tapes being rapidly fast-forwarded and rewound before eventually having the life squeezed out of it.
Throughout the disc Kelley's sense of pacing and composition ensure that no matter what's happening now, something else is always around the bend. "These Are Distractions" is made from mostly small gestures, quick breaths, little squeaks and rubbings... the musical meat comprised of things that others once discarded. Soon the breaths become longer and the sqeaking turns into whistling pitches, before bringing in a rusty hinge accompanied by bison passing gas. Then strangled notes rise and rise to a reveille-toned finish. "Shearing Husks" sounds like it's title, grainy digitized sound hiding a horn song in there somewhere, and the beginning of "Accumulating Errors (What Is Peripheral?")" is the sound of air through ductwork. Reminds me of walking around in the physical plant at my old school. It also poses an interesting question and reinforces the feeling that boredom is really only just a lack of attention on what's right in front of one's nose.
