In a fast half hour, this cello/reed/drum trio moves seamlessly through jazzy, noisy and melancholy moments, never resting but never quite upsetting their delicate, woody balance.
The trio, Canadians Peggy Lee and Dylan van der Schyff with American expat Michael Moore playing sax and clarinet, met at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in 2000 for this nimble little set. Although divided into two tracks, it could easily have been a dozen. They strike many moods and motifs, none for long and none seeming out of place.
Moore, of course, is best known for his work in the ICP Orchestra and related projects. Here he relies less on melody than he often does, playing fast and searching lines as guided by a great young rhythm section. Lee easily fills the bass end with swooping low tones and often carries singing higher parts at the same time. van der Schyff is a subtle but restless drummer, always looking over his shoulder for the next change in direction, never interrupting but never letting his partners sit still.
There's little by way of liner notes, but this would seem to be the entire set they played. If so, it was a surprisingly short one, although not one lacking in information. The 34 minutes fly by and are filled with ideas.
