To list the instruments on this strong, self-produced disc would be to create a misrepresentation. Its not that the guitar-bass-drum trio is so wedded to extended technique that they refuse to play their instruments the way God intended; the strings, in fact, are almost conventionally approached, although enigmatically played. But the trio somersault around, playing disparate parts in a confined space, such that the suggestion of a melody instrument with a rhythm section misses the point entirely.
Halvorson is a remarkable guitarist who studied under Anthony Braxton and has been working primarily with dancers around New York City. She tends toward tasteful runs on her electric hollow-body, with limited use of effects. Thomas maintains a quiet, unimposing bottom end, at times perhaps overshadowed by the other players. Nakatani defines much of the sound field with gongs and metallic scrapes. They eddy around each other for five scenarios, swapping places in the pool, before coming together for a graceful, near ambient sound wash on the final track. Lovely.
