Fake The Facts is the trio of Mats Gustafsson, Dieb 13 (Dieter Kovacic) and Martin Stewart, and this is their second full-length record. It's an ingenious mix of live playing and pre-recorded sounds, where it's often difficult to tell which is which. The first minutes give us vinyl crackle and tiny metal percussives, string thumbings and manipulated records, amp hum and subsonic rumble, and amid this storm the occasional brief saxophone stirrings. That'll give you a good idea of what follows.
You might, as I did, recognize (or think you do) a few of the records being played, but rather than detract I think this just ups the humor quotient. A blow-by-blow of the various contours developed during this disc's running time would be exhausting (and ridiculous), but there are many moments that stick out for me: The little drum machine loop during "Socks Full Of Sawdust", feedback and texture during "Polyphony Of A Metropolis", the tiny squeaks and rattles at the beginning of "Dance Your Cares Away" and the way Gustafsson blends with them... I could go on listing these, but you could pick your own.
These guys do a good job of blending seemingly disparate approaches, making of them a form that works. They take the idea of "genre" and grind it underfoot, leaving us to marvel at the resulting remains. I think that the title Soundtrack might be a misnomer, as it can imply sound made to accompany something else. I suppose one could let the sounds here work as fuel for flights of imagination. Then again, close attention will be rewarded with an ever-changing feast of quick-witted, deftly constructed sound works.
