Guitar/drums duo of Martin Philadelphy/JeremyCarlstedt that's a bit slower/mellower take on the strings and skins formula. Very melodic and, dare I say it, dreamy for the most part, with minimal use of effects pedals and little discernible overdubbing. Though most of the 16 titles here are improvised, most of these pieces sound very much like songs, with repeating patterns and logical structures. They do lean occasionally toward the free end of the spectrum (as on "Cheswick" or "Antz") but never stray far from a melody.
Philadelphy's web page devoted to the album mentions a respect for the "spaces around and between the notes", and there's plenty of it here. At times swingingly jazz-like with healthy doses of stoner-rock attitude and a smile for the ghost of Sonny Sharrock. I even detect a bit of ECM moodiness here and there, as in the track "Beach Field". Perhaps a bit of a grab-bag to some, but it does show the duo's range and versatility. Let's see where they're headed.
