A well formed set of three live improvisations from erikM on turntables and electronics, and Michel Doneda using higher-pitched saxophones and radio. Having once witnessed erikM in performance, I have some idea of what he's doing here: grabbing samples from records and melting them into bizarre shapes. He sends out a mind-boggling barrage of ever-morphing sound and his efforts never fail to make me smile. Against Doneda's hissing air flows and gargling squeaks there are a lot of percussive sounds, drum beats and xylophone sprinkles repeating or scratched, a few string sections amid crackly old vinyl, explosions of cartoon brilliance that erupt and then disappear into the fray.
A detailed blow-by-blow would be difficult, as things are flying by so fast most of the time, yet there are brief lulls in the uproar, and these are equally interesting if one is paying close attention. During one section Doneda explores breaths with barely any tonal information while the turntables throw up appliance whines that transform into distant airplane drones, which in turn are supplanted by a frenetic and discordant string quartet. This is followed by piles of mangled French-speaking voices, spinning forward and back at various speeds, which empty into a banging percussive episode.
This release is an important example of how newer technologies can be used in concert with older more traditional practices, displaying concentration, imagination and a healthy dose of humor. That it's a document of a live performance makes it all the more impressive.
