Though attributed to Tony Marsh, this is actually a duo by percussionist Tony Marsh and Veryan Weston on church organ, recorded at St. Peter's church in 2009. This is a beautiful recording to which the church's acoustics add some of its own character. The packaging for this release is also unique: a double-fold cover conceals a separate inner sleeve with color photos of the players.
Each of the 4 pieces titled "Stop Time" is a short solo from Marsh, thoughtful and inventive, and his kit sounds fantastic. I would wonder about the choice of church organ as an instrument for free improvisation, but Weston brings a strong ear and a lot of humor to the proceedings. "Stop Go" has the earmarks of circus music (as indeed a lot of bits here do), and lets us know what we're in for. Breaks between pieces hardly seem to matter, as it works as one long duo improvisation occasionally broken up by drum solos.
On a good stereo system the acoustics are expansive, odd overtones hanging in the air sliced by thump or swish. At times Weston gets the organ to sound completely unlike itself, more like a melodica or even a violin. Witness the beginning of "Stop Out", which goes from strings to sick bagpipes to cloudy note clusters, stop-timing and belching as Marsh punctuates and comments. Eventually a B-movie horror show organ cluster rears up, as you knew it would. At times it's easy to forget just what instruments are being played here, which is always a hallmark of good music for me.
