Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"It's hard to believe that German born saxophonist and composer Ingrid Laubrock has been recording since the late 1990s, perhaps because there is a distinct newness to every project she releases. Although she trained with Jean Toussaint in London for a short time and later with Dave Liebman, Laubrock is very much a self-made artist with a style that is plainly her own. She came to wider recognition with her self-titled Sleepthief trio debut (Intakt, 2008) and more so with Paradoxical Frog (Clean Feed, 2010), a trio that included pianist Kris Davis and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. As Laubrock has moved further toward the avant-garde and free improvisation, her star has continued to rise.

Ubatuba (also the name of the quintet) features a powerhouse quintet that includes Tim Berne. He and Laubrock both play alto here while the leader doubles on tenor. The eclectic Dan Peck, on tuba, has a resume that includes work with trumpeter Nate Wooley, saxophonist Tony Malaby and Anthony Braxton. Trombonist and visual artist Ben Gerstein has worked with Henry Threadgill as well as Kris Davis and Sorey. Laubrock's long-time colleague and spouse Tom Rainey is on drums. The inexhaustible Rainey has appeared on more than eighty recordings, working extensively with Berne and recording several albums as a leader.

In her liner notes, Laubrock explains that her compositional method on Ubatuba was to create a polyphonic, melodic and organic experience, juggling the mass and area, structure and free space and she has more than succeeded in that daunting task. The ten-minute "Any Breathing Organism" is initially a powerful murmur of low brass until Laubrock briefly rolls a jolt of adrenalin into the piece and then allows it to resettle. On "Homo Diluvii," Laubrock finds another gear. Rainey intricately introduces the piece and the brass and reeds slowly and dramatically build to a feverish improvisation.

"Hiccups" incorporates bits of melody into an otherwise unstructured and tentative performance. At thirteen minutes, the piece has plenty of time for stratifying improvisations and the musicians take full advantage without playing over each other. Similarly, "Hall of Mirrors" and "Any Many" are amalgams of unforgiving boundary-pushing and darkly mysterious passages. At almost sixteen minutes, "Hypnic Jerk" closes the album like a self-contained suite. It moves from an agitated state to a resonant and ominous atmosphere that Rainey eventually guides back and forth to its dramatic conclusion.

Ubatuba is an ambitious creation in terms of Laubrock's astoundingly complex writing and in the masterful musicianship from all involved. The combination of low brass and thorny, snaking saxophone lines are clearly and extraordinarily steered by Rainey. It all makes for a powerful impression and brings Laubrock's organic creation to life on this very unique album."-Karl Ackermann, All About Jazz

"Tim Berne (born 1954) is an American jazz saxophonist and composer.

Described by critic Thom Jurek as commanding "considerable power as a composer and ... frighteningly deft ability as a soloist", Berne has composed and performed prolifically since the 1980s. His mainstream success has been limited Ð Berne recorded two albums for Columbia Records Ð but he has released a significant body of work over the decades spanning dozens of critically acclaimed recordings.

Though Berne was a music fan, he had no interest in playing a musical instrument until he was in college, when he purchased an alto saxophone. He was more interested in rhythm and blues music Ð Stax records releases and Aretha Franklin, especially Ð until he heard Julius Hemphill's 1972 recording Dogon A.D.

Hemphill was known for his integration of soul music and funk with free jazz. Berne moved to New York City in 1974. There Berne took lessons from Hemphill, and later recorded with him.

In 1979, Berne founded Empire Records to release his own recordings. He recorded Fulton Street Maul and Sanctified Dreams for Columbia Records, which generated some discussion and controversy, due in part to the fact that Berne's music had little in common with the neo-tradionalist hard bop performers prominent in the mid-1980s. Some regarded Berne's music as uncommercial. In the late 1990s Berne founded Screwgun Records, which has released his own recordings, as well as others' music.

Beyond his recordings as a bandleader, Berne has recorded and/or performed with guitarist Bill Frisell, avant-garde composer/sax player John Zorn, violinist Mat Maneri, guitarist David Torn, cellist Hank Roberts, trumpet player Herb Robertson, the ARTE Quartett and as a member of the cooperative trio Miniature.

Recent years have found Berne performing in several different groups with drummers Tom Rainey and Gerald Cleaver, keyboardist Craig Taborn, bassists Michael Formanek and Drew Gress, guitarists Marc Ducret and David Torn, and reeds player Chris Speed.

He is one-third of the group BBC (Berne/Black/Cline) along with drummer Jim Black and Nels Cline of Wilco. The group released a critically acclaimed album called The Veil in 2011.

Berne's complex, multi-section compositions are often quite lengthy; twenty- to thirty-minute pieces are not unusual. One critic wrote that Berne's long songs "don't grow tiresome. The musicians are brilliantly creative and experienced enough not to get lost in all the room provided by these large time frames." "

"Dan is a tubist currently living and working in New York City. Since his move there in 2005, he has been active as a soloist, improviser, and sideman in a wide variety of settings. Dan's current interests are in experimental music and improvisation, and he has performed at many of New York City's most respected venues for creative music including The Stone, Roulette, and Issue Project Room. Dan has collaborated with many New York artists, including Tony Malaby, Nate Wooley, Michael Attias, Ben Gerstein, Tom Rainey, Peter Evans, Kris Davis, Ingrid Laubrock, and Matthew Welch. Recent projects include recordings with Tony Malaby's Novela (Clean Feed), Harris Eisenstadt's Canada Day Octet (482 Music), and Jeff Newell's New Trad Band. Dan will also be on a forthcoming Anthony Braxton release, featuring music from the Falling River Series in small ensembles from Wesleyan University.

Dan currently leads a trio comprised of himself, Tom Blancarte (bass) and Brian Osborne (percussion). The group plays a mix of freely improvised music and his compositions, some of which are influenced by music of the Doom Metal genre. Their debut LP, "Acid Soil", is out on the Heat Retention Records label. In March of 2011, the Trio completed a 9 day tour of the midwest/east coast.

Equally at home in more traditional jazz settings, Dan plays in the old-timey jazz band Grandpa Musselman and His Syncopators. The Syncopators appear frequently at high society events in and around New York City, and in 2007 took part in the Jazz at Aspen Festival, directed by bassist Christian McBride.

Dan also plays a lot of contemporary music. He has premiered solo tuba works at St. Bartholomew's Church, Merkin Hall, and The Stone. In 2009, Dan was featured as part of Kagel Nacht, a celebration of the music of composer Mauricio Kagel, in which he performed two of Kagel's solo works, Atem and Mirum. As an orchestral performer, Dan has played under great conductors such as James Levine and Herbert Blomstedt, and has worked personally with composers such as Helmut Lachenmann and Alvin Lucier. Dan is a member of the International Contemporary Ensemble, and has also worked with the American Composers Orchestra, Signal Ensemble, New York City Ballet, New World Symphony, and the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra. Dan recently recorded a DVD of Iannis Xenakis' chamber music for Mode Records, with the International Contemporary Ensemble and percussionist Steven Schick conducting.

Currently, Dan plays on the Broadway musical Chicago, and is adjunct-faculty at New Jersey City University."
