Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Banabila worked with Radboud Mens occasionally, but as far as I know (in the vast catalogue of Banabila one can easily get lost) not much of that ever materialized into a release. On the disc 'Live 2015' we find two long pieces; they are both from 2015 and is by Banabila and Mens recorded as Le Guess Who and the other one at the Steim Summer Party and here Marco Douma also performed along with the duo. His contribution didn't make it to the disc as he's a video artist. His images are on the backside of the cover. I know the music of both gentlemen quite well, and I am quite surprised by what I hear. Sure, Radboud Mens made some great minimal techno records (for the long-lost Audio.NL label) and Banabila is also known to dabble with a fair share of rhythm, but in these two lengthy pieces they slowly construct a fine ambient house sound. You can hear the long building up of pieces, via a path of dark ambient sounds and little by little bits of the rhythm, are unveiled until you realize at a certain point it's all swinging back and forward; a full-formed ambient house track in progress. Mens brings his glitches to the table, but he expands them into a formal house beat, and the melodic touches might be Banabila's. Voices from deep space are used, just as the forefathers did of this music ages ago (well, all right, twenty-five years ago). There are lengthy passages between the beat pieces, the chill-out phases of the compositions and here both men show their talents as gifted improvisers. This is some sixty minutes of a pleasant trip down memory lane or just an early summer party. Hell, or both! Do you see what I mean? Lovely CDs, so why only 100 copies of both?"-Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly

Artist Biographies

"Michel Banabila, born 1961, is a sound artist, composer, and producer. Banabila releases music since 1983 and has produced musical scores for numerous films, documentaries, theatre plays and choreographies. He worked / performed in The Netherlands, Poland, Lebanon, UK, South Africa, Russia, Japan, Spain, China, USA and Belgium. Banabila is especially keen on mixing disciplines and music styles, using elements and influences from jazz, electronic music, classical and world music. Therefore there is no particular genre to categorize Banabila's music. In addition to acoustic instrumentation, Banabila uses electronics, field recordings, and snippets from radio, tv and internet. He collaborated with different types of artists like Anton Goudsmit, Erkan Oğur, Hanyo van Oosterom, Holger Czukay, Joshua Samson, Machinefabriek, Mete Erker, Oene van Geel, Radboud Mens, Salar Asid, Sandhya Sanjana, Scanner, Yaşar Saka , Eric Vloeimans, and Zenial, among others.

Besides making albums and musical scores, Banabila works with theatre, dance and visual art on more conceptual artistic projects. He builds a database with samples; uses the city environment as a recording studio, collects fragments of spoken texts, which he composes into soundscapes, audio/visual installations and performances. Using recordings of speech in several languages Banabila experiments with the tonality of words and the "sound system" of languages. Banabila worked on various projects with video artists Geert Mul, Olga Mink, and photographer Gerco de Ruijter. With Geert Mul he has an audiovisual set, Big Data Poetry, which they performed live in venues like The Barbican (London) during the Logan Symposium 2014, Yukunkun (Beirut) during the Global Week For Syria 2014, and TENT (Rotterdam) during Sound Spectrums 2012. With Olga Mink he performed at the LUX Festival (Sevilla), the VAD Festival (Girona) and the State Of The Image Festival (Arnhem) in 2006. For Gerco de Ruijter he did sound design for several stop-frame animations, like the critically acclaimed Crops, shown in the Hirhshorn Museum (2013 / Washington DC) and Ringdijk at Panorama Mesdag (2016 / The Hague)"

"Radboud Mens is a sound-artist, composer and sound designer. He started creating noise-machines in 1988. In the early 90s he attached contact mics to dog's brushes that he used to destroy vinyl records by scratch-playing them, boosting the signal through broken cassette-decks and recording the results. He also made rhythmic-noise using a broken turntable. In 1994 these experiments were released as a two CD set by the British label i-Records under the project names Hyware and Technoise. To achieve the full effect, listeners had to mix the two discs together themselves. From 1997 on he also released music under his own name, music that is more minimal and conceptual. For his CD Cl;ck, which was made in 1997/1998, but released two years later, he used digital clicks and errors he collected while cleaning up digital recordings during his stint as a sound engineer at the Centre Of Electronic Music in Amsterdam. Pulse, his next CD release, is based on a DSP function called 'convolution'. He worked on the vocabulary for this CD for two years.

Radboud Mens has worked with a broad variety of sound artists and composers, including Stephan Mathieu, Janek Schaefer and Timeblind, voice-artist Jaap Blonk, guitarist Dan Armstrong (as Fitness Landscape), Michel Banabila, Mark Poysden (as Alignment), Craig Ward (ex-Deus), and Matthijs Kouw. His music has been released by Staalplaat, Mutek_Rec, AudioNL, ERS, Bake Records, Noise Museum, Takashi Mobile, Tapu Records and Touch; and Audio-NL and Vynalogica released some of his minimal-techno as a series of 12" LPs. In live situations he collaborates with video artists such as Marco Douma, Remco Schuurbiers, Bas van Koolwijk and Jpech. He co-founded the ERS label with Dan Armstrong in 1999, which is dedicated to experimental ambient-noise and drone music; after a break of 10 years, ERS is now active again.

He presented a radio show called Earbitten for the Amsterdam free radio station Radio 100 for sixteen years between 1986 and 2003. He still has a radio show called 230 Volt on the Concertzender in the Netherlands and alternates as the producer of the Staalplaat radio shows on dfm.nu"
