Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Air Ceremony: The name is about the temporality of all things live music, the ritual of which is what pulled me into the music life, being a teenager going to concerts in the city, dancing, watching, seeing the immediacy of these humans playing instruments and thusly playing the crowd, exciting, stimulating, impressing. There's a lot of love between a good audience and a good band... Then of course there's this belief i have which is that in smaller (older, saner) societies music was in the life, inextricable and therefore not for purchase but (perhaps) to be supported by the works of the community.

For me, my musician life happens because of people for whom the music is inextricable; supported with energy and attention, passion (and yes some $kril). Living is a hustle and is filled with mundanity, unfulfillment, disappointment, hard work and uncertainty; the musical ceremony, gathering with friends, this other place that is life in sound, it's expressing, releasing oneself into the air. The ceremony hits the wind and travels, it's gone, placeless, massless, houseless, penniless, it's at least something "they" haven't figured out how to make me purchase ((yet?))."-Dustin Carlson

"[...] Guitarist Dustin Carlson's "Hands That Feed" from his newly released Air Ceremony provides the dense shapes that puts melody and rhythm in a circular flow and harmonically expansive interplay with Nathaniel Morgan (alto saxophone), Eric Trudel (baritone saxophone), Danny Gouker (trumpet), Matt Mitchell (Prophet 6), Adam Hopkins (bass) and Kate Gentile (drums). Think a guitar-centric Tim Berne.

Composer, teacher, collaborator, sideman and, yes, guitarist Carlson has been a fixture in the NYC scene since high school. He's worked with Ches Smith, Matt Mitchell, Michael Bisio and Anna Webber, among many others. Air Ceremony (Out of Your Head Records) is the debut album by his band of the same name. [...]"-S. "Danny is a trumpet player currently in Brooklyn, New York, where he is active in the improvised music scene. He released his debut album in 2014 on the pfMentum record label with Signal Problems, a long-standing group with a unique way of improvising, guided by Danny's compositions. He leads additional projects under his name, featuring his compositions: "DG's Misfit Toys", and "DG's Dog and Pony Show" and is set to release a recording for 3 trumpets and 3 basses entitled "Sanctuary" on the pfMENTUM label in the fall of 2017. He is active as a sideman and contributor in numerous groups, including Will McEvoy's Curriculum Quextet, Dustin Carlson's Air Ceremony, and the Wing Walker Orchestra. Danny also curates a weekly improvised music series in Brooklyn, A.E. Randolph Presents, which has presented over 100 musicians from around the world since 2015.

Guided by great bands and bandleaders throughout the history of jazz, Danny is particularly interested in the ways in which musicians can develop as a group. When looking for inspiration, he looks to the ways composers/bandleaders like Miles Davis, Sun Ra, Don Cherry, Henry Threadgill, Duke Ellington, and Ornette Coleman crafted not only beautiful compositions, but also created one-of-a-kind ensembles to play said music.

Danny is also active in education and a wider understanding of the arts in society. Since the fall of 2013 he has served on the national faculty for The Art of Science Learning, a NSF funded project investigating the link between art and science education and has co-founded SFZ Creative, a group that uses improvisation to help organizations practice innovative behaviors.

Danny has a Bachelor's Degree from Towson University, where he studied closely with Dave Ballou, and a Master's Degree from NYU where he worked with Ralph Alessi and Laurie Frink among other esteemed faculty."
