Musica De Selvagem (Decloedt / Nader / Rodrigues / Ferreira / Marques): Volume Unico (Shhpuma)

Reacting to negative comments about Brazilian music, Sao Paulo-born double bassist Arthur Decloedt recruited saxophonist Filipe Nader to create a new, spontaneous and free-form take on Brazilian jazz, using pop songs as a jumping off point, with four vocalists and a five piece band creating compelling new and unusual hybrids of Brazil's rich, rhythmic and compelling music.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Music of Savages. The name of this project comes from a xenophobic saying of a French musician to Arthur Decloedt, when this Sao Paulo double bassist was living for some time in Paris. The music in question in that sad episode was, you guessed... Brazilian music.

Returned to his country, Decloedt and saxophonist Filipe Nader decided both to turn that negative remark to a positive one, formulating a "savage" (read: spontaneous and free) kind of Brazilian jazz, to differentiate it from bossa nova and fusion, the styles generally perceived in Brazil as "jazz".

They invited another saxophonist (Oscar Ferreira), a trumpeter (Amilcar Rodrigues) and a drummer (Guilherme Marques) to play mainly improvised music. Because the refered bigot was also mentioning the work done by the singer-songwriters, the next decision was to make versions of songs written by the new generation of Brazilian Popular Music and treat them the way Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra used to with the revolutionary hymns of the world. Here is the result, with the composers themselves singing on top, namelly Sessa ("Muusica"), Tim Bernardes ("Morto"), Luiza Lian ("Dois Blocos") and Pedro Pastoriz ("Assovio").

If you enjoyed what David Sylvian did with the likes of Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Christian Fennesz and Marc Ribot you're gonna love this, and even more if you're a fan of Caetano Veloso and Chico Buarque, being also an enthusiast of creative jazz and exploratory music. This record is a joint venture between Shhpuma and Selo Risco labels."-Shhpuma

Artist Biographies

"Born in Brazil in Sao Paulo in 1988, Arthur Decloedt began studying music at the age of 12. After learning the basics of music with his father (Ivan Decloedt, bassist of the Sao Paulo Orchestra) he quickly began working as a musician in bars and restaurants in the city of Sao Paulo. Through his father, he had the opportunity to take private lessons with great bass players from the music scene in Sao Paulo: Gabriel Bahlis (Jazz Sinfonica), Sizao Machado (Elis Regina, Djavan, Chet Baker) and Marinho Andreotti (Zimbo Trio).

After starting professional life very early (at age 13), in 2007 he joined the Faculty of Music "Santa Marcelina" (MDTF), where he studied for a year. He moved to France in 2008 at the age of 19. He studied for two years at the CRR de Paris with Jean Charles Richard, Emil Spanyi, Pierre Bertrand, Joe Quitzke and Marc Buronfosse. Currently he studies classical bass with Huei Min Blin (Opéra de Paris) at the Conservatoire Jean Wiener in Bobigny, near Paris.

Meanwhile, since 2010/2011, he teaches double-bass at the same conservatory in Bobigny. He was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire in 2012 in the jazz department, with Riccardo Del Fra, Hervé Sellin, François Théberge, Glenn Ferris and Patrick Moutal. He met many musicians in Paris and now works regularly with Kaimaki, Phillipe Baden Powell Trio, Antunes Rubinho Quinteto, Arthur Simonini Group among other formations."

"Sessa is a long-time fixture of both the American and Brazilian music scenes, either as collaborator with NY guitar legend Yonatan Gat, or as co-founder of São Paulo rockers Garotas Suecas. Sessa's concerts are already stuff of legend in Brazil, as he takes the stage accompanied solely by female background vocalists and Afro-Brazilian percussion. While the songs often deal with subjects such as the sensual body in times of digital excess, the music points to new, more subtle directions for Brazilian pop in 2018 - a deep, minimalist, understated, almost insinuated use of the endlessly rich textures and rhythms that defined the songwriting history of Brazil - one which Sessa now joins as one of the most promising new voices."
