Endresen, Sidsel / Jan Bang: Hum (Confront)

Using sampler, dictaphone, and voice, the duo of Sidsel Endresen and Jan Bang improvise and interact to create unorthodox hybrids of fractured electronics and articulated word, as edgy and engaging as it is unusual, captured live at Victoria Nasjonal Jazzscene, in Oslo, Norway in 2016, a great followup to Bang's "And Poppies From Kandahar" Samadhi album.

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Electronics whiz, studio producer and Punkt co-director Jan Bang teams-up with vocalist Sidsel Endresen on Hum, an album released as part of Confront Recordings' Core Series. Recorded live in Oslo in 2016, Hum focuses on atomized gestures quarried from mutant combinations of voice and corrupted circuitry."

Artist Biographies:

"Sidsel Endresen (born 19 June 1952) is a Norwegian jazz vocalist, composer and actor. She was part of the Jon Eberson Group. Since 1987, Endresen has pursued a successful solo career, resulting in 13 records under her own name including several recorded for the ECM label.

Endresen was one of the most pronounced female jazz musicians in Norway in the beginning of the 21st century. She is a versatile artist, who likes to challenge her voice with new experimental forms and combination of jazz and other artistic expressions. Her work has moved from "fusion" and "chamber jazz" in the 1980s and 1990s, to improvisational "new" musical forms in the mid 1990s until today. She has also moved from larger formats to explore solo, duo and trio formats. The last 15 years have her work mainly been concentrated on the genre of free improvisation music, both as a performer and as composer.

Endresen studied English and Anthropology and stayed in the UK back in 1976, before settling in Oslo, where she started her artistic career.

She worked as a singer, composer and songwriter with soul group «Chipahua» (1979- ), with Jon Eberson Group (1980–87). With Eberson, she made a series of musically strong albums at the interface between jazz and rock that was highly popular and acclaimed by a growing audience. The result of this cooperation was five celebrated CDs, awarded two times the Spellemannprisen.

Endresen and Westerhus is followed by new experimental Norwegian musicians like Natalie Sandtorv and Torgeir Standal in The Jist duo."

"Jan Bang (born 21 August 1968 in Kristiansand, Norway) is a Norwegian musician and record producer, known from several albums and collaborations with musicians like Morten Harket, Sidsel Endresen, David Sylvian, Nils Petter Molvĺr, Arild Andersen, Bugge Wesseltoft, Arve Henriksen and Erik Honoré.

Bang played with Erik Honoré in «Woodlands» (EP, 1988), and they have released two albums (2000, 2001). He has also contributed to albums with Bertine Zetlitz, Bel Canto, and has written music for the film Ballen i Ņyet (2000). In recent years he has played with Dhafer Youssef, and in 2004 he received the Gammleng Award i klassen studio, and together with musician colleague, Erik Honoré, he initiated «Punktfestivalen» in 2005.

He is one of Norway’s most accomplished and influential producers and the epithet electronics guru has stayed with him for a long time and with good reason. Bang is the kind of musical innovator and bridge-builder who consistently manages to balance progressive thinking with popular appeal. He is always looking for ways of moving music and people forward, and by creating new meeting places and musical intersections he is the kind of person who makes events like «Scene Norway» possible. In addition to hosting «Punkt», Bang will also contribute to the opening concert where he will perform with one of his many musical collaborators, the celebrated Norwegian trumpet player Arve Henriksen.

John Kellman of the All About Jazz magazine, recognized Jason Moran & Jan Bang at the Moldejazz and Arve Henriksen/Jan Bang Double CD Release Show at the Punkt Festival, Kristiansand, Norway, September 2013, as one of his 25 "Best Live Shows of 2013".

Bang has also appeared live at Music Tech Fest Berlin in 2016 with Mercury nominee Eska in a unique one-off improvised performance."
