Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"We are happy to present the second part of the Fenetre Ovale project. After a fist well-received record which brought together composer Karl Naegelen and improvisers Eve Risser and Joris Ruhl, the group expands with the arrival of percussionist Toma Gouband and violinist Amaryllis Billet. Thanks to these new sound possibilities, the musicians on this new volume extend and deepen their meticulous quest for an acoustic alchimy, changing a violin, clarinet, piano and percussion into a starling's flight, fluid mechanics, a troglodyte temple, gold, or lead. Mystical, trivial, finely carved, the music takes shape through the tension between the strict precision of writing and the exciting fragility of the musicians' playing, which Karl Naegelen carefully included in his partition. Among the twelve tracks featured on this project, five miniatures form a coherent subset, initiated by a request by France Musique' radio show Alla Breve."-Umlaut

Toma Gouband plays percussions with singing stones, foliage, drums, pin apple, and develops rythms based on proportions, crossing speeds, colors.

"One doesn't even need to 'enter' into the music of Toma Gouband: our ears (and eyes, if we have the pleasure of seeing him at work) are invited, by the spectacular and extraordinary organisation of colors and timbres that make up his dreaming inventive universe. Pieces of flint, natural skins covering a horizontal bass drum, which has scattered upon it tiny bells or blocks of wood, branches and twigs... pebbles rolled on the ground, inverted cymbals collcting thus all sorts of natural resonators... The high-hat cymbals have been replaced by...they've also been replaced by stones! Animated by an interior pulsation made from the superimposition of mysterious cycles, like so many clocks telling life's time in polyrythms that collide and cross over each other, the music of Toma Gouband transcends the idea of an imaginary territory, for it invites us to approach it as we would a social rite or even a ceremony of love. A weaving of the tissues of sound, with wisdom, sio that we feel them as universal, as though they come or to become, for which the visual metaphor could be those traditionel Kuba cloths from Upper Zaire that made of fabrics sewn one on top of the other, to which are added motifs according to an organisation that is rigorous but seems to be governed by rules that have been transmitted only to the initiates who create them. Thus, this is a music initited by the history of the world, unique, free of the constrains imposed by convention and which responds only to its own interior strenght: a summit of the musical art."-Benoît Delbecq

"Saxophonist and guitarist in his first hours, Karl Naegelen started composition at the Conservatoire National de Region and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon. In 2006, his work is greeted by a diploma with honors and a Scholarship by Foundation Salabert. He continues his training at the Musikhochschule in Hamburg and participated in several masterclasses, including Berlin with George Aperghis. He writes for the Orchestra National de Lyon, Ensemble Résonance Contemporaine, Quartuor Pli, the Ensemble Linea and works regularly with the pianist Wilhem Latchoumia. His creations are played in many festivals in France and abroad: Musica in Strasbourg, Encuentros in Buenos aires, music-Action in Vandoeuvre-les-Nancy, the International Piano Festival of Girona and Orleans, Paris, Hamburg, Lyon, Berlin, Davos ... Body size, poetic and theatrical inherent in his compositions brought him also to create the soundtrack to various shows. He co-authored with Johanna Lemarchand "Alice in wonder", show for a dancer and two musicians, following a residency at GRAME. He is currently pursuing studies in Java (Indonesia) on the gamelan music. Fascinated by improvisation and music from outside Europe, Karl Naegelen seeks to preserve in writing the flexibility and spontaneity of the music features of oral tradition, through a constant search for quality sound and stamps."
