descriptions, reviews, &c.

"A split CD focusing on two aspects of the work of Berlin-based flautist and composer Sabine Vogel.

The first half of the disc presents a composition by Sabine constructed using recordings made at various exterior locations as part of her work with Landscape Quartet, a group committed to creating music in and with the natural environment. The other members of the quartet are Bennett Hogg, Stefan Östersjö and Matthew Sansom, and you can see some of their work documented here

The second half of the disc contains a recording of a live improvisation performed at a church as part of the NOW now festival in Sydney in 2012, with Sabine on flutes in duo with Chris Abrahams, who plays pipe organ."-Another Timbre

Artist Biographies:

"Sabine Vogel was born in Munich, studied jazz-flute at the Anton Bruckner Conservatory in Linz, Austria. In 2000 Sabine Vogel moved to Berlin, since 2005 she has been living in Potsdam.

As a flautist Sabine Vogel focuses on sound and improvisation, using extended techniques both acoustic as well as electronic, creating a very personal contemporary language for the flute. Discovering and producing the unheard, the intimate, in relation to sound production within the flute, is her main focus of exploration. She takes the sounds from the inside of her flute - the microcosm of her flute world - and transports these sounds, with the help of amplification, into a sound-able-hear-able world. Bringing what is inside into the outside. She then combines this world of sound with self-made field recordings- the natural macrocosm of existing sound - forming a composed mixture between the macro and microcosmic. Recently she became more and more interested in site specific work, doing sound installation combined with live playing in natural environment.

Sabine Vogel has played as a soloist or in various formations on festivals like: ISEA RUHR, Ultima Festival/ Oslo, EMS Festival/ Stockholm, Ultraschall Festival/ Berlin, High Zero/Baltimore, Internationale Ferienkurse Darmstadt, Audiocraft, Oxford etc

Her current projects are: ORNIS; an audio-visual Duo with british artist Kathy Hinde, a Duo with australian pianist/organist Chris Abrahams, Landscape Quartet - an enviromental, soundart project with Bennett Hogg, Matt Sansom, Stefan Östersjö - She is a member of the "Splitter Orchester", based in Berlin Sabine Vogel has a lectureship for flute at the University Potsdam

She has played and worked a.o. with Anthony Braxton, Arto Lindsay, Tony Buck, Jim Denley, Chris Abrahams, Alex Nowitz, Malin Bång, Andrea Neumann, Schwimmer,Shannon Cooney, the Walter Thompson Soundpainting Orchestra."

"Chris Abrahams was born in Oamaru, New Zealand but grew up in Sydney, Australia.

He became very active in the Sydney jazz scene in the early eighties playing with modern jazz groups including Mark Simmonds' Freeboppers and The Keys Music Orchestra. With Lloyd Swanton he formed the 60's modern jazz-influenced The Benders in 1982. During its day, the band released three albums - E, False Laughter and Distance.

In 1984 Chris recorded and released his first solo piano album - Piano, followed in 1986 by Walk.

In 1985 Chris became a founding member of the Sydney indie rock band The Sparklers. As a result of this, Chris began working regularly with the singer and songwriter Melanie Oxley. Chris collaborated with Melanie, writing songs and producing albums, throughout the nineties. There are five releases with her: Resisting Calm (1990), Welcome to Violet (1992), Coal (1994), Jerusalem Bay (1998) and Blood Oranges (2003).

Chris released a third solo piano album, Glow, in 2001. This was followed in 2003 by Streaming, and then Thrown (2004), Play Scar (2010) and Memory Night (2013).

Chris has collaborated, in both recording and performance, with many contemporary improvising musicians including Burkhard Beins, Mike Cooper and Anthony Pateras. He performs regularly in the improvising music scenes both in Australia and Europe."
