"The debut recording from this Montreal-based duo is one of the most pleasurable listening experiences we've had in some time. Epps and Zubot have worked together in a huge variety of settings, both as musical collaborators/bandmates and as presenters of one of Montreal's longest-running weekly nights of improvisation, Mardi Spaghetti, which takes place in the back room of a place called Le Cagibi. This disc, which has been in the vault since being recorded a few years ago in Montreal, covers a staggering amount of musical territory, and does so with grace and panache. There is some very high-level mind-melding going on here; theirs is a type of freedom that is derived not so much from the fact that they're "free improvising", but from the vast array of choices available to players with such refined musicianship. Also a not-so-oft seen instrumentation, put to wonderful effect. Top-shelf stuff."-Bug Incision
"Joshua Zubot is a musician who spent his younger years honing his skills in the West. During this time, Josh toured internationally with a violin group called Barrage. Soon after, Josh delved into the world of improv and electronic music playing in numerous projects in Calgary, Alberta. In 2005, he produced his first solo album, Crouched Head, on the Drip Audio Label. It ranked #8 on the electronic Exclaim radio charts across Canada.
Josh then decided to further his studies in electronic music and moved to Montreal. Residing here for 4 years he has finished his BFA in Electroacoustic Studies and now freelances mainly as a violinist. In 2007, Josh had the honor of having one of his electroacoustic pieces chosen to be part of Cache 2006, a compilation cd for new up and coming electroacoustic composers.
Josh's musical interests reside somewhere in the middle of jazz, free jazz, avant garde, contemporary classical, folk, improvisational, rock and electronic. Mainly, Josh is a performer/composer fusing many means of styles through the studies of electronics and the violin.
Along the way, Josh has played with numerous different groups and individuals. Some collaborations were with Chad VanGaalen, Lori Freedman, Philippe Lauzier, members of Bell Orchestre, Pierre-Yves Martel, Michael Blake, Bernard Falaise, Rainer Wiens, Michel F Coté, Sam Shalabi, Miles Perkin, Myra Melford, Marshall Allen, Fred Frith, Matana Roberts, Jean Derome, Malcom Goldstein, Pierre Tanguay plus many more groups and individual players.
Josh has played the Montreal, Calgary, Medicine Hat, L'Off Festival de Jazz de Montreal, Jazz festivals, Suoni Per Il Popolo, Sound Travels (Sound Art Festival in Toronto), Festival de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville, Guelph Jazz Festival, Osheaga, Pop Montreal, NXNE, as well as numerous festival circuits in Europe."-Joshua Zubot website
"Ellwood Epps is a trumpeter based in Montreal, where he is a fixture of the city's creative music scenes. His playing is wonderfully versatile, ranging from more (relatively) conventional jazz-ish settings to more idiosyncratic, electronically-enhanced scenarios to free jazz blow-outs to appearances with pop groups. In each of these settings he brings an exceptional level of technique and nuance to the instrument, fully exploring everything it has to offer. He leads a trio of his own direction (with Aaron Lumley and Ivan Bamford) and plays with Pink Saliva, an amazing trio (with a release on Bug Incision) with Alexandre St. Onge and Michel F. Cote. Land of Marigold is his duo with violinist Josh Zubot, and he has a number of solo performances and recordings under his belt. He's played with legendary bassist William Parker's orchestra and with the creator of the "conductions" method of directed improvising (and fellow trumpeter), Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris. Aside from being an exceptional player of the trumpet, Epps is responsible for running two seminal spaces in the city, L'Envers (a loft space which has hosted tons of amazing music since its origin) and Mardi Spaghetti (along with Josh Zubot, in the backroom of Le Cagibi - the inspiration for the Bug Incision shows at Weeds Cafe)."-National Music Center "What's On" (nmc.ca)
