Leandre, Joelle & Lauren Newton: Conversations live in Ljubljana (Not Two Records)
Label: Not Two Records
Released in: Poland

French bassist Joelle Leandre and US/German vocalist Lauren Newton recorded these duos live at Club Gromka in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2010. Through eight improvisations the two explore a diverse set of interactions on string and voice, with unusual and captivating approaches to each instrument that work effectively together. Since the 90s the two have been part of a quintet with Fritz Hauser, Urs Leimgruber, and Heiri KŠnzig, which fuels their confident and imaginative use of their individual languages; this is a conversation drawn out from that group, and their comfortable enthusiasm with each other shows.

Joelle Leandre is well known as a principle player in the European Free Jazz community. She has collaborated and performed with some of the most acclaimed players on the scene, and has also composed extensively for dance, theater, and multidisciplinary performance. Her discography is enormous, as is her energy and determination in composition and performance.

Lauren Newton was born in Oregon, but earned her degree in Vocal Performance at the School of Music in Stuttgart, Germany in 1977, where she currently resides. She works in both the fields of improvisation and 20th century music. From 1979-1990 she was a singer for the Vienna Art Orchestra. In 1983 she received the German Critics Award for her solo album "Timbre". She is a member of the vocal quartet "Timbre", and has worked with a diverse set of artists including Anthony Braxton, Koho Mori, Jon Rose, Aki Takase, &c.

"Joëlle Léandre (born 12 September 1951 in Aix-en-Provence, France) is a double bassist, vocalist, and composer active in new music and free improvisation.

In the field of contemporary music, she has performed with Pierre Boulez's Ensemble InterContemporain, and worked with Merce Cunningham and John Cage. Both Cage and Giacinto Scelsi have composed works specifically for her.

She gave an historic solo concert in "Jazz em Agosto" in 2007 (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal). In this same top jazz festival, Léandre performed also in the "Quartet Noir", a quartet with quite rare live performances, with Marilyn Crispell, Urs Leimgruber and Fritz Hauser.

She has also collaborated with some of the preeminent musicians in the fields of jazz and improvised music, including Derek Bailey, Barre Phillips, Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, India Cooke, Evan Parker, Irène Schweizer, Steve Lacy, Maggie Nicols, Fred Frith, Carlos Zingaro, John Zorn, Susie Ibarra, J. D. Parran, Kevin Norton, Eric Watson, Ernst Reijseger, Akosh S. and Sylvie Courvoisier.

In 1983 she became a member of the European Women Improvising Group (EWIG), which resulted from former Feminist Improvising Group and in later 1980s she co-founded the feminist improvising Trio Les Diaboliques, with Schweizer and Nicols."
