Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"In 2005, the percussionist Pierre Tanguay, a presence on the Quebec music scene, met prominent Belgian jazz saxophonist, Erwin Vann. This promising meeting in Montreal was organized by bassist Michel Mergaerts. The trio shares more than a love for jazz, they also all frequently pass through the Montreal airport. This explains the name of this airy trio and their unique style of jazz. Its sensitivity is weaved with spirited improvisation and buoyant rhythms. Between the free and wild polyrhythmic play of Pierre Tanguay and the delicate virtousity of Erwin Vann's pure precision we find the firm stance and light hand of Michel Mergaerts' soothing sanctuary. A twist to the expected, a comforting surprise for the soul, the sounds of Yul uplift, making theirs a truly unique trio.

Beligan jazz saxophonist Erwin Vann has been travelling as a professional musician since 1985 through Europe, Africa and the Americas. He has worked with Toots Thielemans, Joe Lovano, Wayne Shorter, Aldo Romano, Norma Winstone, Kenny Wheeler, Billy Hart, Paolo Fresu, Marc Ducret, Karl Berger, Lindsey Horner, Bobby Previte and Reggie Washington.

A percussionist, composer and inveterate inventor, Pierre Tanguay's music shows the wide range of his experience in ancient and contemporary music, jazz, and music for dance, theatre and cinema. Born in Quebec City in 1957, he has devoted himself to music full-time since 1978. He plays with some twenty established groups, such as Jean Derome et les Dangereux Zhoms, Évidence, Castor et compagnie and Karen Young, and is the founder of Strada, Midi tapant and Derome Tanguay Danse. He has produced five albums and collaborated closely on some fifty others, and has more than twenty compositions for dance (Lucie Grégoire, Andrew de Lotbinière Harwood, Irène Stamou and Francine Gagné) and a number for theatre and film (Allan Booth, Imago and Roberto Ariganello) to his credit. He regularly tours throughout Canada and Europe.

Born in Brussels in 1950, Michel Mergaerts started his career as a blues guitarist, before taking up the bass. He studied and played with Belgian luminaries Fabien Degryse (both in his jazz trio and in the band Dry Clean Only), Steve Houben (notably in the traditional music project Panta rheï), Pirly Zurstrassen, Nathalie Lorier, Nicolas Thys, and Jean-Louis Rassinfosse. A Quebec resident for the past seven years, Michel has performed with chanteuse Julie Lebon and is currently playing bass in Trioxyde, a prog-rock/jazz outfit."-Ambiances Magnetiques
