"With groups like Sex Mob, Millennial Territory Orchestra and Diaspora Soul, Steven Bernstein is energizing the downtown scene with a passionate and indefatigable creativity. His brilliance continues with Diaspora Suite, the fourth installment in his Diaspora series for Tzadik and perhaps the best! Twelve original compositions exploring the Jewish tradition are brilliantly performed by a nonet of California musicians including Ben Goldberg, Peter Apfelbaum and several key players from his legendary band the Hieroglyphics. Channeling Miles Davis, Gil Evans and the Sephardic traditions of Darkness and Light, this is fabulous new Jewish music by one of the most talented and charismatic figures in the downtown scene."-Tzadik

Artist Biographies:

"Steven Bernstein (born October 8, 1961), is an American trumpeter, slide trumpeter, arranger/composer and bandleader from New York City, who lives outside of musical convention.

He is best known for his work as an arranger and a trumpet player in his bands Sexmob, the Millennial Territory Orchestra, The Lounge Lizards, Butler, Bernstein & the Hot 9, and The Midnight Ramble Band, which have garnered him four DownBeat® Critics Poll Awards, three GRAMMY® Awards, one GRAMMY® Award nomination, and a London Times "Jazz Record of the Year" Award. He has worked on over 131 recordings and has played with a diverse group of jazz giants such as Rosewell Rudd, Sam Rivers, Don Bryon, David Murray, Dave Berger, Mocean Worker, and Medeski, Martin & Wood, and others including My Morning Jacket, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Lou Reed, Digable Planets, Sting, Courtney Love, and Ryuichi Sakamoto."

"Nels Courtney Cline (born January 4, 1956 in Los Angeles) is an American guitarist and composer. He has been the guitarist for the band Wilco since 2004.

He first came to prominence in the 1980s playing jazz, often in collaboration with his twin brother Alex Cline, a drummer. Since then, he has worked with a wide range of musicians in punk and alternative rock, notably Mike Watt and Thurston Moore. He also leads the groups the Nels Cline Singers and Nels Cline Trio.

Cline was named the 82nd greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in November 2011."

"Devin Hoff is a double-bassist, bass guitarist, guitarist and songwriter. He began playing music seriously at age 15, and has continued to do so ever since, foregoing college as he was already working at his chosen profession. Torn between the visceral energies of punk and metal and the spiritual freedom of free jazz in his youth, he has spent the last 20-plus years exploring the resonance and dissonance of these musical tendencies. Devin has played and recorded with many musicians and bands over the years, including Carla Bozulich, Nels Cline, Vijay Iyer, Carla Kihlstedt, Joshua Redman, Kira Roessler, Mike Watt, and Xiu Xiu. His main creative vehicles of the past decade or so are the "crust jazz" bass/drums duo Good For Cows (with drummer Ches Smith) and his ongoing solo bass project, The Devin Hoff Platform. He also plays under a pseudonym in various crust punk and metal projects."
