descriptions, reviews, &c.

"The musical inspiration of the Berlin Art Quartet is based on two records of the New York Art Quartet which were published under the direction of saxophonist John Tchicai in 1964 / 65. The then young student of architecture Reinhard Brueggemann, an avantgarde jazz drummer from 1965 to 1971 in the small circle around Jost Gebers, the later Free Music Production founder, was deeply impressed by the ART sounds from New York City.

The idea of founding a Berlin Art Quartet was born in 2013 by Reinhard Brueggemann (drums), using the specific instrumentation of the New York Art Quartet with the renowned band members Matthias Schubert (tenor sax), Matthias Mueller (trombone) and Matthias Bauer (double bass). Trombonist Johannes Bauer had already taken Matthias Mueller's place in 2013 and was a committed member of the band until his death in 2016. His very last concert was with us on October 19, 2015 in the jazz club "B-flat".

Also in his memory we continue our way in the free music of contemporary jazz and improvisation. The freely improvised music of the Berlin Art Quartet will continue to provide fascinating sounds and spirited interplay. After more than half a century, free jazz is still the music of freedom, self-determination and collective power — in other words, the music of the future!

"The utopia of the > idea of a language of music < - without social, ethical and other barriers, understandable and experience-able by all people - a deeply democratic utopia inspires the music ...
