Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"DNS - taking big bites of the khandas three cafes deep is a live recording of improvisatory miniatures that mimic the form of collage. It is the first collaborative effort of Joseph Schlam and Alexander Cooper, made in the attic of a childhood home, and launches the label's efforts. Drawing from the duo's shared upbringing in North Carolina's Piedmont region, the duo convened over the course of a week, the results of which prompted the creation of BLTC.

Live improvisation amplified in stereo via two amps, using drums, voice, live electronics, and field recordings.

The intentional aspects of the record draw on discussions of a favorite book of Cooper's: Eugen Fink's Play as Symbol of the World (Indiana University Press). It took an in situ collaborative setting to let the compositional approach unfold. Much of the electronics processing was informed by Pogus Productions' 2004 sextet record Trios, Costin Miereanu, and Jaap Vink. Compositional approaches were informed by Lionel Marchetti, Luc Ferrari, and Dagar vani.

The flow of musical and verbicovisual references eddy into a loch of exploratory play."-Bu Lang Tribute Cake

Nachthund [VINYL + CD]
(Umlaut Records)
Three recordings from percussionist Hans Lingens in his 2nd solo album on Umlaut, working at the intersection between improvised and composed forms of experimental music: "Nacht", a montage of prerecorded layers of mostly rolls and brush sounds; and two recordings in one take using close miking as he performs on a single cymbal with mallets ("Hund") and a bass bow ("Manatee").
Silvola, Juhani
Wolf Hour Roundelay
(Shhpuma)
Finnish/Norwegian guitarist Juhani Silvola describes the music on this fascinating solo album, performed on acoustic and prepared acoustic guitars (using objects below and above the strings) and augmenting his playing with electronics & amplifiers, as "speculative sonic archaeology" or "ritual music made by a civilisation that could have stepped off the pages of a Jorge Luis Borges story.
Killick!
Imbricate

Recorded in the studio as an urgent response to the latent unease in the time of pandemic and political dissent, NY poet, violinist, composer and improviser Sarah Bernstein uses washes of distorted violin, ecstatic vocalizations, and poetic spoken word, an expression of immediacy and tension between extremes, a personal and articulate set of observational expressions.
