Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"This meet-up between two thoughtful practitioners of minimal and process-oriented music succeeds not because it is resourceful but because its gestures are clearheaded. Disciplined and exploratory, it is like observing someone fixing a watch: methodical and calm, periodically getting up and selecting a tool, working for stretches of full concentration, and hearing the footsteps and rustle of clothing. The titles of the pieces - "Distinct" and "Concealed" - suggest tensions between public self-presentation and private self-knowledge, and yet these recordings were made live, with sounds of the room and the activity and movements of the players suggesting a theatricality that complicates both poles.

"Distinct" plays like a long-delayed catch-up session between friends, seriousness arising periodically before resolving into active and glassy communication. If "Distinct" is a catch-up, "Concealed" plays as a tense second meeting: piano-led, with zipped spoken-word loops and long stretches of pause, eventually falling into a satisfying equilibrium. The barely controlled nature of no-input mixing confronts the more manageable elements of electronics and tape, with keyboards complicating the relationship. In the hands of Baron and Martin, minimalism is a constant and active search."-Notice Recordings

Lyle, Erica Dawn
Colonial Motels [CASSETTE + DOWNLOAD]
(Notice Recordings)
The former touring guitarist for Bikini Kill, who has also worked with The Raincoats and Kim Gordon, in a 2-part solo work of experimental approaches to the electric guitar, starting with minimal loops that slowly layer in intensity until reaching a climactic release and dispersal, picked up again in the second part for a unique work of noise and alien guitar soloing.
Wind Tide (Andrew Weathers / Gretchen Korsmo)
Blue Breaking Brown [CASSETTE + DOWNLOAD]
(Notice Recordings)
One "Small Dog" and one Big from the Texas experimental duo of Andrew Weathers on synth, lap steel, recorder & electronics, and Gretchen Korsmo on voice, keys & percussion, both members of the Full Spectrum Records collective, their confident collaboration morphing drones, sonic deformation, resonance, voice, bells and mysterious sources in two well-paced & passionate sonic journeys.
Angeles, Camilo / Joanna Mattrey
Hailstone Temple [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Notice Recordings)
Excerpted from their 2022 concert at Museo Ex Teresa Arte Actual in Mexico, flutist Camilo Ángeles (TVL REC label), also performing on bass flute, joins with New York City violist Joanna Mattrey, an active performer and improviser associated with Issue Project Room and Roulette, for six unusual duos of wind, string and voice leveraging the natural resonance of the museum space.
Silbert, Stella / Nat Baldwin
01.30.22 [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Notice Recordings)
Cantankerously informed and paced like a perfect tumble, the duo improvisations of Massachusetts collaborator Stella Silber on turntables and Nat Baldwin on upright bass augment their work through turntable preparations and static, Baldwin performing all over his instrument, as the duo surprise and maintain interest through accessible abrasiveness.
Malcolm Goldstein / Fred Lonberg-Holm
Missa Amissa [CASSETTE + DOWNLOAD]
(Notice Recordings)
Bringing to ears a 2003 encounter in Chicago, IL between legendary violin improviser, conceptualist and writer Malcolm Goldstein and exploratory cello improviser Fred Lonberg-Holm, through two extended dialogs weaving their strings around each other and finding unusual intersections and unions, from rapid action to introspective beauty; unsettling and inspired.
Munden-Dixon, Adrianne / Leo Chang
Some Time [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Notice Recordings)
Unusual interactions between electronically manipulated violin and an AMPIRI--an electronically enhanced Korean double reed instrument--from the Brooklyn duo of Leo Chang and Adrianne Munden Dixon, seven improvisations numbered "Sixteen" to "Twenty-Two", each a uniquely idiosyncratic exchange from quick slippery dialog to raspy dissonance of unexpected directions.
Motl, Kyle / Patrick Shiroishi
Apparitions [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Notice Recordings)
The second album on Notice Recordings for West Coast free improvising saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi is a duo with San Diego-based double bassist Kyle Motl, in an exceptionally well-balanced example of powerful expression from both players, free blowing and turbulent exchanges offset by experimental introspective passages in four extended and excellent improvisations.
Breylin, Aaron Foster / Luke Martin
Recursive Retent
(Edition Wandelweiser Records)
Excerpting part of an eight-hour performance recorded over an amplified live environment of a text score for two pianists using one piano, each positioned at the opposite registers of the piano, one player creating a block of note phrases using intervals of a 2nd or 3rd with each note allowed to decay before the next, repeated by the other player following a set of rules.
Frey, Jurg
Fields, Traces, Clouds
(Edition Wandelweiser Records)
Three compositions from clarinetist and Wandelweiser peer Jurg Frey, performed by Luke Martin on electric guitar, Laura Cetilia on cello, J.P.A. Falzone on piano & vibraphone, Morgan Evans-Weiler on violin, and Jurg Frey himself on clarinet; beautifully reflective music indicating Frey's working method and his relationship with wide, quiet sound spaces.
Duplant, Bruno
Deux Songes (Les Jours Sont Faits Pour Expliquer Les Nuits)
(Meenna)
Two beautifully subtle works for an ensemble of strings and electric piano from French composer Bruno Duplant, realized by the Boston-based Ordinary Affects ensemble or Jordan Dykstra, Morgan Evans-Weiler, JPA Falzone, Luke Martin and Ashley Frith, the first a quintet and the second a string quartet, creating illusory affects of motion and space through abstraction.
Houben, Eva-Maria
Ensemble Works [2 CDS]
(Edition Wandelweiser Records)
Three detailed and fragile compositions from German minimalist composer Eva-Maria Houben reveal themselves over two CDs, performed by the Boston-based experimental music ensemble, Ensemble Ordinary Affects, with Houben herself on organ recording at Memorial Chapel, in Wesleyan University, CT: three movements from "echo fantasy"; "gesang XI"; and "unter anderen".
Martin, Luke
So Softly That It Came, A Wild Dim Chatter, Meaningless
(Edition Wandelweiser Records)
Luke Martin began this work with a field recording at Mentryville Park in Southern California, which was transcribed by himself and Amy Golden, Ben Levinson, Davy Sumner, and Ryan Gaston using Martin's system of notating silence, then combined into the final score for this recording.
