Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning.

Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups.

"Johannes von Buttlar is a versatile drummer active in and between the areas of New Music, Experimental Music and Improvisation. He was a scholarship of the National Association of Music Schools at the Studieneminar Kiel under the direction of Paul- Gerfried Zulauf, studied classical drums with Stefan Rapp and Prof. Olaf Tzschoppe in Bremen and in Basel free improvisation with Fred Frith and Alfred Zimmerlin. He also taught at Gregor Hilbe and took part in workshops with Julio Barreto, Malcom Braff, Jim Black and Glen Velez. Concert tours included him in Brazil, Mongolia and Japan."
