"This is the second Nakada/Olive duo release, following the 2021 "Entenka" on Tsss Tapes. This CD, the twentieth release on 845 Audio, is drawn from a December 2021 recording session in Kobe, Japan. Osaka electrician and sound-maker/circuit-breaker Kayu Nakada patiently called to life the exposed circuit boards of a half-dozen semi-defunct Roland, Yamaha and Zoom rhythm machines. Tim Olive used magnetic pickups, several radio bands and the sounds of a neighborhood sports event. The original recordings were edited/overlaid/arranged and mixed by Olive."-845 Audio
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Kayu Nakada Kayu Nakada: "Circuit boards from electronic instruments are extracted and short circuited with solder. These exposed boards produce sounds on their own, but also start to interact as I stack them with inserted sheets of metal, or suspend them to dangle and fold over each other. This is how I perform. Originally, I was inspired by the prepared piano. I have come to consider my practice of circuit bending as an extension of this, because I physically and electronically modify the internal structure of commercial synthesizers and drum machines, and work with timbre that emerges from a personally created state. At the same time, I also explore the unpredictable and indeterminate that occur from the short circuits. The stacking and dangling of circuit boards or the inserting of metal are techniques that I discovered to create more indeterminacy and unpredictability in the sounds that appear. I have created more than 40 of these circuits, which I call "Bug Synths (Bagushinse)." I select 6 to 8 of these each time I perform. I regularly play in live venues and art spaces as a solo performer, but also actively play in improvisational groups or exhibit these boards as sound installations." ^ Hide Bio for Kayu Nakada • Show Bio for Tim Olive "The music of Tim Olive arises from collaboration with fellow musicians/sound artists, collaboration with physical and temporal setting, and collaboration with those involved in the act of listening. Using simple materials (magnetic pickups, steel strings, tuning forks, metal strips, hand-wound motor mechanisms, magnetic tape, dental floss and analog electronics), Olive's work examines presence and the present, the interplay of the human with material/time/space, and the uniqueness, intensity and unrepeatability that lives in each performing and/or recording situation. He is interested in music as a social activity, as a way of creating community, a way of countering the forces which lead to an increasing atomization of contemporary life; music as a felt experience rather than as a concept or a theory. A Canadian residing in Kobe, Japan, Olive has released music on Japanese, European and North American labels, with Jeff Allport, Cristian Alvear, Pascal Battus, Alfredo Costa Monteiro, Samuel Dunscombe, Nick Hoffman, Anne-F Jacques, Jin Sangtae, Jason Kahn, Takahiro Kawaguchi, Francisco Meirino, Katsura Mouri, Takuji Naka, Makoto Oshiro and Ben Owen. Olive has performed/recorded in Asia, Australia, North America and Europe, with the recording collaborators listed above, as well as with Akiyama Tetuzi, Maria Chavez, Che Chen, Kelly Churko, crys cole, Joe Foster, Haco, Hong Chulki, Bonnie Jones, Richard Kamerman, Kostis Kilymis, Siew-Wai Kok, Madoka Kouno, Tomasz Krakowiak, Fangyi Liu, James Rushford, Carl Stone, Fritz Welch, Nate Wooley, Jared Xu and Yan Jun. In addition to organizing events in Japan, Olive runs the label 845 Audio." ^ Hide Bio for Tim Olive
