Recorded at naTo, in Leipzig, Germany, on December 17th, 2013, by Marco Birkner.
"Nothing is unconditional. That jazz pianism like that of Oliver Schwerdt alias Elan Pauer is faced with the task of making the best of their level of reflection, Hoch, is darned factum brutum. In the aboutness of his eponymous and trend-setting opening solo, Bach, Boogie Woogie and Cecil Taylor can be cored with little effort. The latter in particular also casts its shadow on 'Brown Shoes', where Pauer and Lillinger are preparing to refute Frank Zappa's derogatory "Don't make it" with pianistic verve and percussive depth (and vice versa). Lillinger, pecked at by Pauer, rolls over the kettledrum, throwing wood, shells, bells and tin around so that his partner ducks into the inside piano to rummage around for suitable counter-arguments.
This brings you to Taylor and Oxley in the reference jungle. And with the first trumpet sounds that Axel Dorner utters in 'Black Schuster', in their trio with Bill Dixon. When Yoko Ono as muse and the Spontaneous Music Ensemble as door opener are evoked, the three shoemaker boys can throw themselves on the puff cake on this side of the donkey bridges with an even wider grin. Crackling, yowling, chuckling, g-rolling, with long threads of sound and shrill accents, with spittle simmering to spiritual webs and rumbling leftfield plonking or lively figurines from the right sleeve, while Lillinger rattles with chains, tickles with rattles, with broom and cane blows tanned and scourged sheets. Doing and filling tones and other snarling correspond to prepared PiaNonsense, and in general there is a lot here with a lot in the blazing air. Lastly, on the occasion of his 50th birthday, 'Passing Mamba in Ocher Gray' offers 11 minutes of pure Dorner artistry, trumpet-like riot and over-trumpet-like infra and ultrasound, to whom, if I call him indescribable, I do not pay a small compliment."-Rigobert Dittmann, Bad Alchemy
Double bassist John Edwards is also credited on this album for the track "Black Schuster" knocking on the venue door remembering Yoko Ono ringing the studio doorbell while Spontaneous Music Ensemble recorded Karyobin.
