Iruretagoiena, Oier: Kulakantu (Nueni)

Four pieces from Oier Iruretagoiena (Tusuri, Larraskito Audio Dissection Unit) using computer generated sound of an abstract nature, with irregular rhythms and intersections in harmonics and feedback, actively reserved and avoiding extremes while creating a cohesively curious collection of quirky, aberrant, cranky and surprisingly compelling connected sounds.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Oier Iruretagoiena is another lesser-known creator from the Spanish quarter devoted to delivering a particularly cruel strain of noise; I often feel that many of them are in thrall to Miguel A. Garcia who seems to have set a template for the entire Basque region with his stern, brooding abstractions.

Oier Iruretagoiena, also known as Oier I.A. and Tusuri and a member of the group Larraskito Audio Dissection Unit, has recorded with Garcia and Oscar Martin, and is clearly has what it takes to wring strange wheezing and grunting forms from the innards of his computer.

On Kulkantu (Nueni #005). he seems to be controlling feedback and white noise in a carefully-wrought and highly twisted fashion, producing a complex intermittent stream of exquisite ugliness. Unlike our two friends above, he doesn't seem especially angry, but is playing the role of an isolated loner, breeding unusual types of insect hybrids which he keeps in perspex cages in his basement.

The cover art is from the pipe organ at St Martin of Tours in Ataun, described elsewhere as a "masterpiece of Iberian Baroque organ-making". I'd like to think Oier made a special pilgrimage to see this historically significant instrument; what self-respecting keyboard player wouldn't?"-The Sound Projector

(Creative Sources)
Joing Portuguese and Spanish improvisers for four recordings in Bilbao, Spain, this sextet presents sound works using unusual orchestration--piano harp, viola, guitar, metals, electric organ, paper, contact mics, and electronics--balancing spacious exploration with assertive moments of percussive and caustic sound, evolving bold sonic and timbral combinations.
Other Recommended Releases:
Zuckerman, Adam
A composition for at least three musicians and processed field recordings from Adam Zuckerman, here configured as a quintet eliciting a poem by Paul Celan, organizing the lines of the poem into multiple movements, exquisitely performed by Kanoa Ichiyanagi (viola), Zaq Kenefick (harmonica), Juan Marroquin (flute), Dylan Marx (guitar) and Kristyna Svihalova (percussion).
(Bad Architect Records)
Subterrene, aka Grant Stewart, is a sound artist developing deep and cloud-like bursts of sound that create textures and aural interactions of an hallucinatory nature, here evoking the coercer--"the inverse of the seducer, using pressure, intimidation, or force to shape the behavior of another" in a journey from initial imposition to self-emancipation.
Davis, Greg
(Autumn Records)
Taking modular synths into unusual territory, Autumn Records label leader and relentless audio explorer Greg Davis spent years using a computer controlled modular synthesizer system to generate an obsessive set of synthetic and electronic sounds -- swooping, burbling, chattering, &c. -- assembled into this quick witted and energetic set of compositions.
Spanish electronic musician and artist Estanis Comella in 14 concise pieces of angular electronic rhythmic intersections and interventions, quirky pieces that deconstruct and reconstruct in unusual ways, using the electronica language of, but definitely not intended for, the young dance/edm generation.
