"Walk My Way, a five-volume compilation album, is a fervently collective project in a time of individuation, testament to both the incredible musical range of the guitar, as well as the imaginative possibility of guitarists around the world. The pandemic upended the way that musicians create and perform, turning a previously collective artistic practice into an unavoidably solitary one as artists were forced into their homes for lockdowns. This compilation is born directly from the conditions of our current historical moment, emphasizing music's potential for connectivity, arranged through remote recordings, without a prescribed structure, and capturing their most current work.
The project was defined by collectivity and connectivity, bringing together artists from different backgrounds, taking advantage of a remote gathering that may not have been possible without these circumstances. The series features 49 guitar players, with 32 different nationalities, from 6 continents, and representing every musical background, offering an impressive display of the guitar's possibilities and the artists' deeply imaginative instincts. They represent diverse regional styles and creative preferences, playing both traditional compositions and hugely experimental work. Tracks feature careening guitar solos and classically structured bridges, on harmonious major chord structures and textural, discordant riffs, exploring the full possibility of the guitar's range.
Focusing the series around a single instrument was a natural way to bring together guitarists, tying together diverse sounds with a thematically uniform concept, bridging geographical and musical distances. Produced by 577 Records, the five-volume compilation series will be available online and in a limited-edition CD, bringing the guitar home. Nick Vander, the lead organizer for the project, dedicates the album to "the people lost in this crisis" as well as "the people, aware of global injustice, imagining new futures and working for a better world." Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Harvey Valdes "Harvey Valdes, is a NYC based guitarist, oud player, and composer. He is known for his exploration of the solo voice, adventurous take on harmony, and genre fluidity. His work spans Broadway, experimental theater, solo guitar, Middle Eastern music, popular styles, and film. Harvey has released three albums of his own. On his solo album, Roundabout, he takes a pianistic approach to radically reshaping jazz standards with complex counterpoint and moments of spontaneous re-composition. All About Jazz praised, "His approach is undeniably clever." The seven tracks on his second album, PointCounterPoint, are full of rhythmically driven contrapuntal action and intervallic writing. JAZZIZ Magazine writes, "Links between the Brooklyn-based Harvey Valdes Trio and McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra go beyond the dual frontline of distorted electric guitar and violin set to thundering drumbeats. They also include odd meters, jigsaw melodies, and a slashing fusion-like energy aimed at jolting listeners out of complacency." His third album of solo improvised guitar pieces, Solitude Intones Its Echo, is a mosaic of 18 melody-laced tracks which have a quality of concentrated intimacy. Guitarist and studio ace David Torn mixed and mastered the album and Guitar Moderne featured it as a Record Pick saying, "Valdes' recording reveals him as a master of concision. His 18 short, lyrical, solo electric guitar performances of compelling compositions hook you and leave, well before wearing out their welcome." On Broadway, he held the guitar/oud chair for the 10 Tony and Grammy winning Broadway musical The Band's Visit. In this role he also performed on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert, The Tony Awards, The Tonight Show and received an Emmy, along with the ensemble cast, for their performance on Good Morning America. He has also played on hit Broadway shows including The Book of Mormon, Come From Away, and Tootsie. Other theater work includes the European and U.S. tour with experimental theater The Wooster Group for their production of Francesco Cavalli's 1641 opera La Didone, playing electric guitar and guitar synth. His score for Utopians, which premiered at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival, constituted "one of the longest-lasting guitar improvisations since [Neil Young's score for] Dead Man." He has also composed music for the award winning short film, Talking Piece, and the forthcoming We Got This. As a sideman he has performed in a wide range of styles at venues from Lincoln Center to the Stone with artists including Alan Chan Big Band, Rhys Chatham's A Crimson Grail, Karl Berger's Improvisor's Orchestra, Butch Morris NuBlu Orchestra, Harel Shachal and Anistar, Sean Sonderegger's Magically Inclined, Vlada Tomova's Balkan Tales, and others." ^ Hide Bio for Harvey Valdes • Show Bio for Boris Belica "Boris Belica (Nitra, Slovakia) has played guitar since 2001. Performed with various bands and artists in Slovakia. Longtime collaborator with the VyDi theatre as a composer or dramaturge. Noticeable is his music for movement staging "Mind(the)Body" (2012). Recorded two albums influenced by modern and prepared guitar. Played gigs in Slovakia, Poland and Germany." ^ Hide Bio for Boris Belica • Show Bio for Sandy Ewen "Sandy Ewen was born in Toronto, Canada in 1985, Sandy Ewen received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008. Since then she has resided in Houston, TX where she pursues musical and visual projects and her architecture license. Ewen has released several albums, including a duo with guitarist Tom Carter, a trio with bassist Damon Smith & drummer Weasel Walter, and a rock album with Austin's Weird Weeds. Ewen's visual work is closely tied to her work in sound; she uses both mediums to explore texture, composition and materials. Ewen's microcollages, enlarged through projection and digital printing, are an exploration of material and technique. Using a unique process pioneered by the artist, natural materials and polymers are torn, liquefied, scorched, melted, cut, and fused. When enlarged, the microscopic nuances of these manipulations are manifested in exquisite detail. Ewen has presented prints of her work at 14 Pews (2012), Spacetaker/Fresh Arts (2012), Khon's (2013) & Galeria Regina (2014). As an improviser in both art and music, Ewen sees herself as guiding materials and space rather than executing a preconceived composition. "I like to explore mediums and materials and tease out their essence," says Ewen. "Working with slide projections has focused my eye on the subtitles of natural processes of decay and transformation. Through my work, I am asking questions of the materials rather than dictating answers." Arvind plays solo, improvises with like-minded musicians, and is active in music/dance improvisation. His music took him to play squats, galleries, clubs and festivals from Poland to Portugal, England to Slovenia, Turkey, Chile, Perú, Thailand and Myanmar." ^ Hide Bio for Arvind Ganga • Show Bio for Pengboon Don Pengboon Don (iPlayAlone) is a free improvising guitarist in Thailand. ^ Hide Bio for Pengboon Don • Show Bio for Josue Amador "Josué Amador México Composer, improvising performer and researcher based in The Netherlands. Combining elements of rock, jazz blues, spoken word and improvised musics, Clouser has toured the world with his group A Love Electric, as a solo act and performed alongside luminaries from John Lurie to John Zorn, Flea, Cyro Baptista, John Medeski, Keb Mo, and more, performing at rock, jazz and world music festivals across the globe. Clouser's prolific output and genre-evading creativity had NPR call Todd "a fascinating musician ..... (he) doesn't belong to any scene and doesn't want to", Time Out NYC hailing his rock jazz trio A Love Electric as "illuminating", and Mexico City's La Jornada mentioning the group as "one of the most important acts of recent years". A native of Minneapolis, MN, Clouser grew up traveling the USA following his favorite artists and self publishing poetry and recordings before being signed to Ropeadope Records for his first "proper" release, entitled "A Love Electric". As time and tours passed, A Love Electric became a band, first an instrumental act joined by NYC downtown scene heroes Steven Bernstein, Cyro Baptista, and Billy Martin, eventually settling as a trio that explores Clouser's songwriting while honoring the inquisition and fearlessness or jazz tradition, with Hernan Hecht on drums and Aaron Cruz on bass. The trio has gone on to release 6 records on labels in the US and Mexico while performing nearly 1,000 concerts in the span of 7 years. While Clouser is perhaps most recognized in his Mexico City home as the leader of A Love Electric, he has also released the "psychedelic naked lunch" (Distorsioni Magazine - Italy) record "Butterfly Killer" with the group Magnet Animals (featuring Shanir Blumenkranz, Eyal Maoz, and Jorge Servin) on Rarenoise Records (London, UK). An experimental offering, CHANT found Todd collaborating with street singers, friends, and artists from Mexico City and Minneapolis, the live CHANT show turning into a freewheeling conduction experiment calling the audience to the stage. Clouser also writes songs for a duo project with Mexican singer Renee Mooi, the two performing at festivals and in clubs throughout latinAmerica. His solo song record entitled "Man With No Country" was produced by Anton Fier (Golden Palominos) and released on Billy Martin's Amulet records. A record of "music for unmade film" entitled "Cinema" was self released with pianist Alex Mercado in 2017. As guitarist for the group Klezmerson, Todd has recorded for the prestigious Tzadik Records, going on to perform the compositions of John Zorn at The Village Vanguard in New York City and as part of "Masada Marathons" in Sarajevo and Vienna. Clouser's recent solos releases are "You The Brave : Live at Icehouse" in trio with John Medeski and JT Bates, a series of 3 EP's of quarantine-time compositions entitled "Solitary Daydreams", and a series of collaborations with Mexican experimental guitarist Alex Otaola highlighted by the "sonic calendar", an interactive creative interface up at www.toddclouser.com/otaola-clouser. Philanthropy and community outreach work have been an important of Clouser's work in Mexico and beyond. With the founding of his "Music Mission" initiative, Todd and patrons have donated thousands of dollars worth of instruments, education materials, workshops and basic needs support to communities in Nicaragua, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Mexico City, Durango, and more. Todd is also the founder of Ropeadope Sur, a record label based out of Mexico City with a focus on Mexican acts in search of increased projection of their music, the first act signed being Los Cardencheros de Sapioriz, an acapella group singing slave-era songs on the ranches on northern Mexico." ^ Hide Bio for Todd Clouser • Show Bio for Mohammed Ashraf "Mohammed Ashraf is an Egyptian producer, guitarist and keyboardist, currently residing in Italy." ^ Hide Bio for Mohammed Ashraf
