The second album of this Guy Segers (Univers Zero) project in an eclectic ensemble of improvisers, rock musicians and experimenters, a genre-defying project of primarily instrumental work with interventions of song, merging acoustic & electric instruments with electronics, live improvisation with studio manipulation, to find new forms of mesmerizing music.

"A second volume of the Guy Segers project where the basic live band session is enhanced by an extensive post production involving contributions from a wide range of musicians. This time round several tracks in the collection are focussed around the intense and distinctive voice of Carla Diratz."-Discus
"Martin Archer's Discus label continues its sonic adventures with the latest release from Belgian bassist Guy Segers's improv project the Eclectic Maybe Band. An improbable bevy of some of the finest improv musicians, the project finds group-constructed freeform pieces sitting side by side with Guy's speciality, which is taking improv recordings from different sessions and then stitching them together in the studio over a bass-line written especially to accompany the segments.
It is a fascinating and I imagine a rather painstaking approach, but one that reveals some extraordinary results. Allied to the fact that he has enlisted the mysterious Carla Diratz to vocalise over the top of some of these pieces, it all makes for an almost overwhelming stew of ideas and textures. There is much to take in on Reflection In A Moebius Ring Mirror, particularly as some of the pieces weigh in at over ten minutes and find various soloists being given the opportunity to stretch their legs over their unfurling.
Opener "Horizontal Bounce" is one of the live septet recordings which commences with rolling drums of Dirk Wachtelaer and the probing deep bass of Guy himself. As a rhythm section, they are tight and provide a constant sense of momentum, but it has a shadowy feel, surreptitious and shadow-hugging. Joe Higham's horn is smooth and the whole thing feels kind of slinky, alert yet cool. There is an expansive guitar solo that ends up duelling with a flute and cavorting deliciously down the empty street.
The album owes as much to post-rock as it does to jazz, but trying to categorize it is pointless. "Socie De Gouache", a collective improv, is a lazy piano riff surrounded by curious sound samples that act as little triggers like a patchwork sample, obfuscated and camouflaged with judicious snare. "Oncoming Season Wake" , one of Guy's studio constructions, gives us our first introduction to Carla's vocals; the phrasing is unusual, as if she is trying out a new mouth and is unsure as to whether it works, so is pushing it to its limits, twisting vowels and stretching consonants. Her voice is husky and a little weary, and it is hard to believe that it was delivered over a pre-prepared track as its slight sense of unease somehow prevents the rest from settling.
The album continues in this vein, the two methods juxtaposed, but leading to a connected whole. The collective woodland improv of "Liquid Tempo In A Lost Period" finds the flute as the main protagonist, even though everybody has an opportunity to add to the search; whereas the cut-up of "Quoi?" is quite overwhelming, with the music attempting to fly on all manner of directions. It has label supremo Martin blowing some lovely clear sax, while Carla's vocals again eschew tradition and find their own meter. It is a fascinating voice that adds such mystery to the pieces, and it is interesting that those pieces constructed by Guy around one of his basslines are often the jazziest.
Elsewhere, we have spy-theme wah-guitar, beautiful pastoral piano from Catherine Smet and even a sub-aquatic piece that evokes roiling seas, with mysterious movements and sounds emanating from points unseen. In fact on "'Spreading An Invisible Stream", Carla's lyrics emerge from the murk, "half way down, half naked, half lobotomized". It couldn't be more curious.
Overall, Reflection In A Moebius Ring Mirror is a release of unparalleled scope, almost astounding in its reach, but with its beauty and sense of questing allowing the listener opportunities to immerse themselves. The players are all superb, and Guy's way around the studio means that his constructed tracks are seamless yet exploratory. It is well worth taking a dip into these welcoming waters - but watch out for the currents."-Mr Olivetti, FREQ

• Show Bio for Carla Diratz Carla Diratz is a vocal improvisor and electronic musician, working in rock forms and contemporary jazz. She splits her time between Europe and New York. Her own band is DIRATZ with Dave Newhouse, and Bret Hart. ^ Hide Bio for Carla Diratz • Show Bio for Roland Binet "Roland Binet: flute, tenor saxophone, compositions, head arrangements. In the past: He has been playing the flute as his main instrument since 1967; he participated in the recording of a single with a rock/variety group at the end of the sixties. Played less than a year with two future members of Univers Zéro at the beginning of the seventies (Guy Segers and Roger Trigaux) in a quartet called 'Cubical Sock'. Played a flute solo of 50 minutes of totally improvised music in 1977 at the '24 Hours of Communication at the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Brussels'. He played with the WIM Big Band of Fred van Hove in 1978, and played a flute solo live on the radio in February 1979 during Marc Moulin's RTBF radio program 'Bien Dégagé sur les Oreilles'. After that, during a long period, he concentrated on developing his own musical ideas and composing. In 2014, he has recorded and issued a CD of his own solo flute compositions (7 in total) in honor of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust in the Baltic States entitled 'A Jewish Tragedy; a few hundred copies of which were offered free to the Museum of the Holocaust in Riga/Latvia to give as a present to the interested visitors. This CD is available on the principal music websites outlets." ^ Hide Bio for Roland Binet • Show Bio for Martin Archer "Martin Archer was born in Sheffield, England, in 1957. He started playing saxophone at age 15 and first got active on the Sheffield improvisational scene in 1973. In the early '80s, he recorded an LP with Bass Tone Trap, his first group. In 1983 he formed the saxophone quartet Hornweb, which, in ten years of existence, released three albums. It is during that time that Archer released his first solo album, Wild Pathway Favourites (1988) and founded the Discus label on which he since releases all his music. In 1993, he disbanded Hornweb and turned to synthesizers and sequencers while shifting his activities from stage to studio. He developed a compositional approach in which he records improvisers soloing, then manipulates this raw material, combining it with electronics and structuring it into a whole new piece. This technique is illustrated on Wild Pathway Favourites, Ghost Lily Cascade (1996), and Pure Water Construction (with bassist Simon H. Fell, released in 1999). Later works such as Winter Pilgrim Arriving (2000) moved toward more constructed and less abstract pieces, even making room for melodies and rhythm tracks at times. Apart from his solo work, Archer is also involved in Ask, a duo with guitarist John Jasnoch, and Transient v Resident, an ambient electronics project with Chris Bywater."-All Music, François Couture "Martin Archer is a composer / improviser who is equally at home on stage or in the studio. His own distinctive saxophone playing is rooted in AACM jazz. Through his use of keyboards and electronics, and as a studio producer, he extends this interest into extended song form and leftfield rock music. He is also co-director of the uncategorisably avant choir Juxtavoices. His principle music work is the Discus Music label, the imprint for his various releases, notably by the groups described below. His current jazz based projects include Engine Room Favourites (current a 4 drummer, 14 piece big band), Story Tellers (6 piece group including shaman instruments alongside the conventional instruments), plus various ad hoc smaller groups. All of these are strongly aligned with AACM tradition and teaching. Archer has a long running duo with veteran vocalist Julie Tippetts. Each of their highly acclaimed CD releases deliberately explores song from a different perspective - the duo aims to be truly progressive, and takes in elements from jazz, rock, soul and pure abstraction. Archer's main live performance vehicle is the trio Inclusion Principle with Herve Perez and Peter Fairclough. The group operates in a space between electronics, nu-jazz, contemporary electroacoustic music and free improvisation. In performance you will hear pure jazz skill, electronic beats and areas of texture and abstraction all seamlessly woven into a fascinating and constantly shifting tapestry of sound. The sprawling Orchestra Of The Upper Atmosphere was formed by Archer as an improvising rock group with shades of Terry Riley, Magma, Alice Coltrane and Sun Ra, very much in the progressive / krautrock tradition, and noted for its large scale string, horn and vocal arrangements. Also in rock music, Archer is a member of the USA based heavier than plutonium prog / sludge / zeuhl group Combat Astronomy under the direction of Jamie Huggett. Surprising, delighting and occasionally alarming audiences for a number of years now, Juxtavoices is a 30 piece choir for mainly untrained voices co directed by Archer with Alan Halsey which has racked up dozens of performances and issued three CDs. This eclectic combination of sources and highly individual applications makes Archer a unique inhabitant of the school of English maverick composer / improvisers. Tenor, alto and soprano saxophones, B flat clarinets After studying sculpture at the Brighton College of Art & Design he went to the CAT in Newcastle (now the Newcastle University) where he graduated in Light Music (nowadays called jazz). Several years later, whilst visiting friends and playing concerts in Brussels (1988), he discovered that the Brussels Conservatory was opening a new jazz section and decided to follow the courses -4 years- given by Belgian musicians such as Steve Houben, Jean Louis Rassinfosse and Bruno Castellucci, ending up with a first prize in saxophone and a diploma in Jazz Studies. Whilst at the Brussels Conservatory, he naturally became involved in the Brussels jazz scene, playing with many of the local musicians who were heavily centered around two places 'Travers' and 'The Kaai'. These clubs were a central meeting point for jam sessions and in the case of the Kaai more experimental music. It was here that Joe was able to meet and play with such players as, Hein Van De Geyn, Eric Legnini, Phillip Aerts, Bo Vanderwerf, Sebastiaan De Krom. During that period he also studied with John Roucco, one of the father figures of modern saxophone in Belgium and Holland. After the Conservatory, Joe started playing with many different groups -jazz group Francois Decamps 'Hamp Digs Ham', local brass band 'Combo Belge', blues-soul group 'Odex Protocole' (see projects page for more info), punk-jazz group (with Geoff Leigh of Henry Cow), 'The Morton Fork Gang', and the m-base influenced Thomas & Co, formed by actor/singer Olivier Thomas around the rhythm section of Aka Moon (CDs include: 'Singulier des Pluriels' and 'Le Second Soufle De Josaphat') and the collective trio 'The Jazz Project', which played in residency at the Brussels 'Phil's Bar' for two years. He has also played (or been involved) more recently with many groups. Some of these are : The Wrong Object, Marc Lelangue's Heavy Muffalettas, Eric Fusillier 4tet, PHP, Abdeli, Valve (featuring Bai Kamara jnr), Chris Menten's Jazz Van, and theatre group with Josse De Pauw, Jan Kuijken, Peter Vandenberghe, Pierre Vervloesem, Eric Thielemans and Angelique Willkie in Liefde. He also studied Arabic music on the ney with Hamid Al Basri - one of the oldest and most respected teachers of Arabic music in Europe. This led to Joe spending more time playing the Arabic ney in the classical music ensemble based at the 'Centre Culturel Arabe'. He also became involved in the Jewish klezmer rock group 'Yiddish Tantz Rivayvele' (CD: Le Monde est un Village - Radio Nomade Vol 4. RTBF productions). These experiences eventually led to the creation of Joe's own group Al-Orkesta. Joe also studied with Charlie Banacos until his untimely death in 2009. Following these courses kept new ideas and concepts developing in his playing, and at the same time helped maintain a certain discipline for practice routines. In recent years Joe has spent more time developing improvised music projects such as OPen Source with Hugo Antunes, Augusto Pirroda and Jakob Warembol developing true collective in a group format. Joe has also been spending much time study electro acoustic composition, working with Roald Baudoux on a project known as The Man with the Glass Nose. This project develops the use of sound manipulation with live performance using Max/MSP and Pure Data along with live instruments and voice and also points to a new direction for possible perormance projects. Joe has been following workshops at the Mons University section known as Creactif-Numediart working on developing 'Pure Data' together with live music performance. As a way of developing (and researching) his interest in the historical, anthropological and scientific aspects of music, Joe returned to university in 2012 to study an MA in musicology at the Catholic University of Louvain. He is specializing in the development of computers in music, archeoacoustics and the history of noise through the ages .... among other things!" ^ Hide Bio for Joe Higham • Show Bio for Dave Newhouse Dave Newhouse is an American multi-instrumentalist and composer member of Muffins. Her artistic path reflects her desire to explore the possibilities for integrating the composition and improvisation by componing for various groups, and seeking a common material where classical, contemporary, jazz and tango can meet. She appeared in different bands of various trends in performance or playing improvised music with musicians such as Michael Moore, Peter Jaqmain or Bart Maris. In the alternative rockscene she played with Guy Segers and Michel Delville and went on an European tour with the Rythmiss, an Afro-Cuban percussion band. As a soloist he has been concentrating on the interaction between acoustic drums and electronics (using live electronics, sampling and programming). He has made 3 solo cd's (the last two out on FMR). In 1999 he founded Vanishing Pictures. Using acoustic instruments and electronics, mixing improvisation with arrangements, and working with ever-changing line-ups this band has been one continuous adventure. The musicians who have participated (and still do) have very different backgrounds and come from all over the world, a.o.: Gerrit Valckenaers (B), Jim Denley (Aus), Luc Mishalle (B), Pierre Bastien (Fr), Paul Lytton (UK), Otomo Yoshihide (Jap), I Made Wardana (Bali), Dj Grazzhoppa (B), Babs Jobo (Ghana), Philipp Wachsmann (UK), Luiz Marquèz (Mex), ... Four cd's have been released, all four on FMR. In between his solo work and Vanishing Pictures lies his work concentrating on percussion ensembles. He has been working in duo with American percussionist Michael Weilacher and did a project with Steve Hubback and Trevor Taylor (the Kortrijk Percussion Project, also out on FMR)." ^ Hide Bio for Dirk Wachtelaer
