NY Tuba-driven trio The Gate led by Dan Peck on tuba & effects, with Tom Blancarte on upright electric bass and Brian Osborne on percussion, in a studio album of shorter pieces exploring the dark side of the huge brass instrument and the band's dark, enormous sound, with tongue-in-cheek titles like "Black Bird of Death Spewing Death Puke"; ominously impressive.

Recorded at Menegroth, The Thousand Caves, in Queens, New York, in September, 2015, by Colin Marston.
"Arguably their best record to date-as well as their most sonically immense-Island Virus's plodding doom and gloom horror suggest the Melvins' 1992 sludge-metal classic Lysol as made by minimalists under the influence of jazz and classical music. With Blancarte and Osborne serving as the both steadily pummeling and free-improvisational zigzagging anchor, Peck takes center stage to shell out apocalyptic rumbles from his tuba. There is a method to his madness-part planned, part off the cuff. "I added amplification and effects to my setup over time, initially in response to Tom having essentially an electric instrument," he says "So it was a volume issue at first. Distortion, reverb, and ring modulation followed, all Electro-Harmonix. I go from very light distortion, which can approximate the timbre of overblown brass, to totally tricked-out, where it doesn't sound at all like a tuba. I've learned some tricks and certain settings over time. But I definitely enjoy just turning knobs randomly and seeing what happens." "-Bandcamp Daily
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Dan Peck "Dan is a tubist currently living and working in New York City. Since his move there in 2005, he has been active as a soloist, improviser, and sideman in a wide variety of settings. Dan's current interests are in experimental music and improvisation, and he has performed at many of New York City's most respected venues for creative music including The Stone, Roulette, and Issue Project Room. Dan has collaborated with many New York artists, including Tony Malaby, Nate Wooley, Michael Attias, Ben Gerstein, Tom Rainey, Peter Evans, Kris Davis, Ingrid Laubrock, and Matthew Welch. Recent projects include recordings with Tony Malaby's Novela (Clean Feed), Harris Eisenstadt's Canada Day Octet (482 Music), and Jeff Newell's New Trad Band. Dan will also be on a forthcoming Anthony Braxton release, featuring music from the Falling River Series in small ensembles from Wesleyan University. Dan currently leads a trio comprised of himself, Tom Blancarte (bass) and Brian Osborne (percussion). The group plays a mix of freely improvised music and his compositions, some of which are influenced by music of the Doom Metal genre. Their debut LP, "Acid Soil", is out on the Heat Retention Records label. In March of 2011, the Trio completed a 9 day tour of the midwest/east coast. Equally at home in more traditional jazz settings, Dan plays in the old-timey jazz band Grandpa Musselman and His Syncopators. The Syncopators appear frequently at high society events in and around New York City, and in 2007 took part in the Jazz at Aspen Festival, directed by bassist Christian McBride. Dan also plays a lot of contemporary music. He has premiered solo tuba works at St. Bartholomew's Church, Merkin Hall, and The Stone. In 2009, Dan was featured as part of Kagel Nacht, a celebration of the music of composer Mauricio Kagel, in which he performed two of Kagel's solo works, Atem and Mirum. As an orchestral performer, Dan has played under great conductors such as James Levine and Herbert Blomstedt, and has worked personally with composers such as Helmut Lachenmann and Alvin Lucier. Dan is a member of the International Contemporary Ensemble, and has also worked with the American Composers Orchestra, Signal Ensemble, New York City Ballet, New World Symphony, and the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra. Dan recently recorded a DVD of Iannis Xenakis' chamber music for Mode Records, with the International Contemporary Ensemble and percussionist Steven Schick conducting. Currently, Dan plays on the Broadway musical Chicago, and is adjunct-faculty at New Jersey City University." ^ Hide Bio for Dan Peck • Show Bio for Tom Blancarte "For over a decade, Texan bassist Tom Blancarte has been contributing a vivid pallet of dark frequencies to New York's creative music scene, both as a freelance performer as well as a member of bands such as the electro-acoustic jazz ensemble the Peter Evans Septet, the banjo-shred power trio Seabrook Power Plant, New Timbralist free jazz noise trio Totem, an eerie post-apocalyptic duo with wife Louise Dam Eckardt Jensen (The Home of Easy Credit), improv doom tuba trio The Gate and Danish post-punk improv quartet Sweet Banditry. A native of the Texas Hill Country in Austin, Texas, his formative years included a steady diet of fantasy and sci-fi novels, comic books and video games, and later on a total immersion in death and black metal. Accordingly, Blancarte has cultivated a demented and visceral instrumental practice that transcends the experimental bass canon and pushes improvisatory art to new extremes. He has toured extensively throughout Europe and North America, playing venues that range from dingy squatted basements to international festivals. Recently, he has begun to perform improvised solos on the bass as an exciting new area of exploration, started reacquainting himself with the euphonium (his first instrument), as well as starting the Denmark-based record label Marsken Records. He is on the faculty at the Music and Theater Folk School in Toftlund, Denmark. He lives in Toftlund with his wife and daughter." ^ Hide Bio for Tom Blancarte • Show Bio for Brian Osborne "Percussionist/Sound Artist, Brian Osborne currently plays with the tuba fronted doom improv trio The Gate, the electronics and drums duo, Hatchers, as well as with a Duo with guitarist, Nick Millevoi. After spending his youth covering punk bands in basements and playing in Orchestra at school, Brian went on to obtain a BM in Percussion Performance from the North Carolina School of the Arts. While there and drumming in the avant rock band Rompecabeza, Brian became interested in improvised/free music. In 2001, after spending a few years split between New York City and Lexington, KY, Brian settled in Brooklyn, began studying with Milford Graves, and performing Javanese Gamelan Music through the Indonesian Consulate. Brian started Heat Retention Records in 2003 which has 38 releases to date. Brian has played with Michael Barker, Robert Beatty, Tom Blancarte, Daniel Carter, Tim Dahl, Peter Evans, Paul Flaherty, Frode Gjerstad, Michael Thomas Jackson, Oliver Lake, Joe McPhee, Nick Millevoi, Dan Peck, Kevin Shea, Tamio Shiraishi, Jeffrey Shurdut, Panagiotis Spoulos, Nate Wooley, Spencer Yeh, George Steeltoe Ensemble, Wretched Worst, Sharks with Wings, Blastocyst, Paper Legs, Reverse Mouth, Dosdedos and more." ^ Hide Bio for Brian Osborne
