Double double bass from the duo of John Edwards and Olie Brice performing live at Iklectik Arts Lab, in London in 2017, a return of sorts as Brice's first live improv gig was opening for the Sunny Murray Trio with Edwards and Bevan; here the two combine, in contrast and confluence as they demonstrate massive technique and concentrative conversation.

Recorded live at the Iklectik Arts Lab, in London, England, on February 5th, 2017.
"The very first improv gig I did on double bass was opening for the Sunny Murray trio with John Edwards and Tony Bevan at the Green Room in Manchester. I was already a huge fan of John's playing, and had heard him live several times, most memorably in trio with Peter Brotzmann and Mark Sanders in Leeds. I was massively impressed by his huge sound, his inventiveness, his energy and the sheer force of propulsion that he always brings to playing situations.
As one can imagine, as a brand new bassist I was pretty nervous about playing before him. John was incredibly generous, kind and supportive, talking to me at length about music and the double bass. Through the years he has certainly been the bassist I've heard live the most frequently, and a constant source of inspiration, friendly advice and support - although there was a period when I felt I should avoid going to hear him for a while, not wanting his influence to be too all-pervasive!
When Tom Ward invited me to do a duo set with another string player as an opening set for his fantastic saxophone quartet, it seemed a perfect opportunity to play duo with John for the first time. The set was as much fun as I had hoped, and the results are what you are about to hear..."-Olie Brice, November 2017
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for John Edwards "After taking up the bass, around 1987, John Edwards co-formed The Pointy Birds who went on to win awards for their music for The Cholmondeleys and Featherstonehaughs dance troupes. The group appeared at festivals in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Moers, Leverkusen, Copenhagen. Around 1990, Edwards played his first gigs with London improvisers such as Roger Turner, Lol Coxhill, Maggie Nicols, Phil Minton. Between 1990 and 1995 Edwards was a member of three touring groups simultaneously: B-Shops For The Poor, The Honkies and GOD. During this period he also became an increasingly regular player on the London improvised music scene and performed his first solo gigs; he composed and performed music theatre with the bass and cello duo The Great Explorers, street-busked a lot and appeared at many more festivals in Germany, Estonia, France, Italy, Czech, etc. Since 1995 John Edwards has become a "mainstay" of the London scene, playing with just about everybody, an activity that has seen him clocking up between 150 and 200 gigs a year. He has become regular player with Evan Parker, in many groupings, and with Tony Bevan, Veryan Weston, and Elton Dean, often in collaboration with Mark Sanders on percussion. He has become a more frequent player on the European (and festival) scene, appearing at Taktlos, Ulrichsburg, Nickelsdorf, Budapest, New Zealand and in the USA. He continues to work on solo performances." ^ Hide Bio for John Edwards • Show Bio for Olie Brice "I'm a jazz and improv double bassist, based in Hastings, SE England.
