Compiled by Elliot Sharp.
"...and here is the fourth volume of this ongoing compilation organized by Elliott Sharp and covering "the parallel realities of contemporary guitarism". As Sharp himself wrote on previous liner-notes, each new collection of guitar pieces reflects "the never-ending joy of hearing fabulous sonic visions" with the guitar or its derivatives, as the main subject. You may not already know every chosen guitarist, but you will soon thanks to this series of recordings. Some of the artists need no presentations, like Rhys Chatham, Kalle Kalima, Bern Nix, Hahn Rowe, Robert Poss, Ron Anderson or Roberto Zorzi, string manipulators of different generations and locales. All are "players with one foot in the future and one in the past, a formula that puts one's ass directly in THE NOW". Such is the importance of this continuing enterprise carried out by one of the most exhilarating guitar stylists of the present day. Every approach imaginable is covered, from Pythagorean alternative tunings by Chatham to the use of a resophonic acoustic guitar by Pete Matthiessen as well as original and surprising uses of delays, looping, and analog or digital sound processors. Is any other instrument capable of such a multitude of creative musical expressions?
Volume 4 is dedicated to the memory of Bern Nix, a sudden loss and a great sorrow."-Clean Feed
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Knox Chandler "Knox Chandler's career has spanned for over three decades, including performing, recording, arranging and producing, with such acts as REM, Depeche Mode, Grace Jones, Marianne Faithful, Natalie Merchant, The Creatures, and The Golden Palominos etc.. His long stints as a member of The Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Cyndi Lauper's band; has given Knox the experience of a worldwide touring musician. Knox attended Bard College in the late 70's. He was regarded as a brilliant musician who was willing to experiment. After graduating from college with honors in composition and performance his professional career took off. Recent shows with X-Patsy's (Robert Longo, Barbara Sukowa), J.G.Thirwell, Butterfly Percussion Parade (Budgie, Mabi, Sugizo, Leonard Eto) and his solo guitar performances demonstrate his current importance in contemporary music. He has recently scored a documentary-installation at the Deutsches Historisches Museum." ^ Hide Bio for Knox Chandler • Show Bio for Tashi Dorji "Tashi Dorji grew up in Bhutan, on the eastern side of the Himalayas. Residing in Asheville since 2000 and soaking up a vast array of music. Along the way, Dorji developed a playing style unbound by tradition, yet with a direct line to intuitive artistry. His recordings feature improvisations that spasmodically grow along tangential, surprising paths. All references break loose during a composition, as Dorji keys into his own inner world. His compositions drag the listener into a labyrinth of warbling tones, where each sound seems to jump out and replace the eerie silence that would otherwise occupy the atmosphere. The textures remain sustained in the reverberation as the vibration of the strings dwindle and ascend. The experience is one equally disorienting and reflective, in which Dorji's musicianship brings haunting beauty and mindfulness to the listener. After a handful of releases on various labels since 2009, Dorji presented his debut LP on Hermit Hut, the label created by Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) in 2014. Since then Tashi has released music in various formats on labels like Bathetic Records, Cabin Floor Esoterica, Blue Tapes, Marmara Records, Feeding Tubes,VDSQ & MIE." ^ Hide Bio for Tashi Dorji • Show Bio for Monika Roscher "Monika Roscher (born 30 December 1984 in Langenzenn ) is a German jazz and independent guitarist, composer, singer and big band leader. Roscher grew up in Langenzenn and studied jazz guitar and composition at the Musikhochschule München . As part of her thesis, she founded the Monika Roscher Bigband in 2012. The band made a lot of attention with their mixture of big band wind instruments, elements of rock, pop and electro, as well as cinematic sound dramas. The debut album " Failure in Wonderland" was released by Enja in 2012. Following the release, the band toured and played at the final concert of the Jazzfest Berlin 2013, the South Tyrol Jazz Festival , the Jazztagen Idar-Oberstein and the Jazz & The City Festival in Salzburg. The band was twice to the fusion festival in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In 2016 the band released their second album Of Monsters and Birds and traveled to Istanbul with the Goethe Institute . In 2017 she played at the International Jazzwoche Burghausen , the International Theaterhaus Jazztagen Stuttgart, the JazzBaltica -Festival and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. She contributed to Ulrich Rasches production "Die Räuber" at the Residenztheater in Munich , which was invited to the Berlin Theater Meeting 2017. In the same year Roscher wrote a choral work for the play "Luther" by the Hans Sachs playgroup Langenzenn and the Klosterhofspiele Langenzenn under the direction of Gabriele Küffner on the occasion of the 500th Reformation Jubilee. For the production "Woyzeck" of the Stadttheater Basel , directed by Ulrich Rasche, Roscher composed the three-hour music for live recording. Since 2017, she has been a guest professor for composition at the Institute for Music at the University of Osnabrück . As a singer, Roscher worked on Gerd Baumann's soundtracks for the Kinofilmen Best Chance by Marcus H. Rosenmüller and the performance of Gregor Schnitzler , as well as on the second album of the Munich band Moop Mama ("Das rote Album"). In the publishing house vierdreiundreißig appeared in 2015 a collection of Rosmer's compositions for dulcimer." ^ Hide Bio for Monika Roscher • Show Bio for Rhys Chatham "Rhys Chatham is a composer, guitarist and trumpet player from Manhattan, currently living in Paris, who altered the DNA of rock and created a new type of urban music by fusing the overtone-drenched minimalism of the early 60s with the relentless, elemental fury of the Ramones - the textural intricacies of the avant-garde colliding with the visceral punch of electric guitar-slinging punk rock. Starting with Guitar Trio in the 1970s and culminating with A Crimson Grail for 200 electric guitars in 2009, Chatham has been working for over 30 years to make use of armies of electric guitars in special tunings to merge the extended-time music of the sixties and seventies with serious hard rock. Parallel with his rock-influenced pieces, Chatham has been working with various brass configurations since 1982, and recently has developed a completely new approach to collaborations, improvised and compositional pieces involving trumpet through performances and recordings that started in 2009. Chatham's trumpet work deploys extended playing techniques inherited from the glory days the early New York minimalist and 70s loft jazz period. Starting in 2014, Rhys has been touring a solo program featuring an electric guitar in a Pythagorean tuning, Bb trumpet, and bass, alto and C flutes. Rhys was introduced to electronic music and composition by Morton Subotnick in the late 60s, and in the early seventies he studied composition with La Monte Young and played in Tony Conrad's early group. These composers are, along with Terry Riley, the founders of American minimalism and were a profound influence on Chatham's work. Chatham's instrumentation ranges from the seminal composition composed in 1977 entitled Guitar Trio for 3 electric guitars, electric bass and drums, to the epoch evening-length work for 100 electric guitars, An Angel Moves Too Fast to See, composed in 1989... all the way to Chatham's recent composition for 200 electric guitars, Crimson Grail, which was commissioned by the City of Paris for La Nuit Blanche Festival in 2005. A completely new version of the piece was commissioned by the Lincoln Center Outdoor Summer Festival in 2009. What does a composer do after mounting many performances with forces of 100-200 electric guitars? The composer gets back to basics, at least that's what Rhys does! Along with the G100 and G3 programs, Chatham is currently offering a solo program, an evening length work with the composer performing himself on electric guitar, trumpets and bass alto and C flutes." ^ Hide Bio for Rhys Chatham • Show Bio for Kalle Kalima "Kalle Kalima (b. 1973 in Helsinki, Finland) began his journey into sound with piano lessons at the age of six. Five years later he switched over to the guitar and has never looked back. He studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and at the Hanns Eisler Conservatory in Berlin under the guidance of Raoul Björkenheim and John Schröder to name a few. After taking up residence in Berlin, Kalima has experienced a revelation in his attitude towards free music. So far Kalle has worked with trompeter Tomasz Stanko, sax player Juhani Aaltonen, pianist Heikki Sarmanto, bass players Sirone, Teppo Hauta-Aho, Carlos Bica & Ed Schuller, guitarist Marc Ducret, composer Simon Stockhausen, drummer Tony Allen and singer Linda Sharrock. He is also playing with Jimi Tenor, finnish underground pop star. Last years have been busy years for Kalima, touring mostly in Europe but also in Africa, Asia and USA." ^ Hide Bio for Kalle Kalima • Show Bio for Ryan Choi "Ryan Choi (born December 2, 1984 in Honolulu, Hawai'i) is a composer and multi-instrumentalist. Choi was classically trained on the double bass from an early age and took up the ukulele in high school. Self-taught as a composer, he first came to international recognition for a series of releases for the baritone ukulele that were notable for being the first to showcase the instrument's avant-garde potential. His debut album, Three Dancers, created after a years-long absence from music, won the 2016 Independent Music Award for Best Instrumental EP and featured the composer on prepared baritone ukulele, percussion and electronics. His work, favoring improvisation and experimentation, is often dense, intricate, and mathematically complex, utilizing advanced harmony and drawing on a range of visual, literary, and musical sources. He also makes extensive use of preparations and alternative tunings. He has collaborated with Kommissar Hjuler and Mama Baer. He lives and works in Honolulu, Hawai'i." ^ Hide Bio for Ryan Choi • Show Bio for Marco Oppedisano "Marco Oppedisano is an American guitarist, composer, recording artist, instructor, and session musician. His work spans (and frequently fuses) art rock, loop music, contemporary classical music and alternative pop. Markus Reuter initially trained as a pianist before switching to guitar in the late 80's, and subsequently 'touch-style' guitar in 1993. Soon after, he developed a unique skill for improvised composition, often employing loop-based technology in order to push the envelope of solo performance. Markus is aligned to several eclectic bands such as Europa String Choir, and String Unit (with Zoltan Lantos), both in the studio and live arena, as well as maintaining an ongoing relationship with electronic musician Ian Boddy - which has to date produced 4 albums and 2 virtual musical instruments. Since the late 90's Markus's mainstay has been the Anglo-German band CENTROZOON, alongside long-term musical partner Bernhard Woestheinrich, and English singer Tim Bowness (of seminal art-rock band No-Man). The group has attracted numerous celebrity fans, including guitarist David Torn, and King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto, who has recently collaborated with Markus both on stage and in the studio. The pair have released a couple of albums under the name Tuner, Totem in late 2005 (remastered version in 2008) and Pole released in 2007. In early 2011 Markus Reuter joined the trio "Stick Men" with King Crimson bassist Tony Levin and drummer Pat Mastelotto." ^ Hide Bio for Markus Reuter • Show Bio for Hahn Rowe "Hahn Rowe is a violinist, guitarist, composer, and engineer/producer involved in a wide range of projects. He learned songs off of tape recordings and CDs and took the occasional private lesson, but after his first summer at the National Guitar Workshop in his hometown, New Milford, Connecticut, he was hooked for life. The inspiration that was sparked in his early years later brought him to the Berklee College of Muisic, where he studied with David Fiuczynski, Jon Damien and David Tronzo and earned a BA in Contemporary Writing and Production. After developing his skills and knowledge at Berklee, Pete moved to New York City to pursue a career as a performing musician. His first pursuits were as a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist with independent rock and folk projects, but he soon became entranced with the traditional music scenes in New York, and delved deep into gypsy jazz, traditional American jazz and bluegrass. He has performed with Queen Esther, Elliott Sharp, Jerron Paxton and Sabir Mateen as well as numerous New York City-based jazz ensembles including: The Avalon Jazz Band, Jessy Carolina and The Hot Mess, The Bailsmen, The Hot Club of Bushwick and Sweet Megg and The Wayfarers. Pete continues to play in a wide variety of styles including jazz (traditional and contemporary), bluegrass, folk, country, avant-garde, rock and bossa nova. He is just as capable playing as a solo guitarist as he is in an ensemble setting and has been working increasingly in this style. In addition to a varied resume of performance experience, Pete maintains a busy schedule as a teacher for the New York City Guitar School and is always accepting private students of all levels for guitar, piano, voice, drums, bass, mandolin, banjo and ukulele." ^ Hide Bio for Pete Matthiessen • Show Bio for Robert Poss "Robert Poss fell in love with electric guitars and basses in 1964 at an age when he still believed one plugged them directly into a wall socket. He memorized the Fender Guitars Catalog and passed through a succession of rock and blues bands before discovering punk in the late '70s and staring to write, record and release his own material. He joined Rhys Chatham's ensemble in the early '80s and remained a core member for several years. He also began performing and recording the music of eclectic electronicist Nicolas Collins, whom he had known since the mid-1970s. Eventually Poss realized that the sound of feedback, distortion and ringing overtones was "the cake, not the frosting" and began trying new ways of writing songs by layering simple chord patterns over drones and looped riffs. It was his initiative that gave rise to Band Of Susans in 1986, and his early experiments became the foundation of their sound. Band Of Susans went on to release two EPs and five LPs (all produced by Poss) before disbanding in 1995. Interviewed in The Wire, Steve Albini stated that "I think Robert Poss...is an enormously underrated guitar theorist. A lot of his approaches to the density of guitar are completely overlooked in any discussion about guitar.....The way he structures the song around the drone instead of finding a drone to fit into the song I think is wholly unique." In 1986, he formed the wall-of-guitars group Band Of Susans, which Rolling Stone Magazine described as "adamantly arty, brainy, visceral and bracing." In 2002 Poss, released two companion solo CDs Distortion Is Truth and Crossing Casco Bay on Trace Elements Records. At the time, Tape Op Magazine described him as a "guitar genius, drone meister ...the master of treated and manipulated guitars." Since his 2002 releases, Poss has composed and performed music for choreographers Sally Gross, Alexandra Beller and Gerald Casel, has worked with ex-Band Of Susans member Susan Stenger on a 96-day musical installation for the Musée d'art Contemporain in Lyon, France, performed at the premier of composer Phill Niblock's piece "Stosspeng" in Krems, Austria and contributed music to an Albert Maysles/Kristen Nutile documentary, Sally Gross: The Pleasure Of Stillness. In 2009 he performed with Rhys Chatham and Robert Longo at a Metropolitan Museum of Art retrospective and participated in Chatham's Crimson Grail project for 200 guitars at Lincoln Center. He has collaborated with Austrian visual artist Margret Wibmer and filmmaker Cat Tyc, and has written guitar-centric articles for The Leonardo Music Journal and The Tone Quest Report. He has also performed and recorded with David Dramm, Ben Neill and Bruce Gilbert (Wire) and produced records for The Meat Joy, Combine, and Seth Josel. He resides in New York City and continues to perform his guitar and electronics pieces in the U.S., the U.K. and Europe." ^ Hide Bio for Robert Poss • Show Bio for Ron Anderson "Ron Anderson was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1959. He is a self-taught rock composer who starting experimenting with new rock concepts, noise, free improvisation while in high school in the mid 1970's. In 1980 he was one of the founding members of Rat At Rat R in Philadelphia. He moved to New York City's Lower East Side in 1982. He started working in his home recording studio experimenting with tape editing, found sounds, noise, and improvisation. He combined these elements with composition and released his first LP entitled Fever Dream in 1987. Ron moved to Oakland, CA in 1989 and shortly thereafter formed The Molecules; they released a total of 6 CD's. He and The Molecules were introduced to the European music community at the Musique Action Festival in Nancy, France in 1993 and since then he has been a regular on the European festival and club circuit, as well as touring in Japan, Canada and the United States. After living in Geneva, Switzerland for one year, he moved back to New York City in 1999 where he formed PAK. He has collaborated with many musicians on numerous projects. He appears on over 60 releases, most recently Oblique Quartet 'Tlaloc Beat' on Alphatauri." ^ Hide Bio for Ron Anderson • Show Bio for Morgan Craft "Morgan Craft is a musician and writer from New Brighton, Minnesota. He moved to New York in 1994. He founded Circle Of Light Recordings in 2001. Fell, Nona Hendryx, Carl Hancock Rux, Daniel Carter, Vernon Reid, Greg Tate. After a period of intensive Tuscan mountain forest recording sessions, he is currently based in Amsterdam." ^ Hide Bio for Morgan Craft • Show Bio for Roberto Zorzi "Roberto Zorzi is to be considered a highly unique character on the Italian music scene: in part because, as far as I know, there are no other guitarists named Zorzi (although there are plenty of Roberto's, but we won't go into that). What matters most is how he plays his guitar, where he chooses to play, the musical acquaintances he has and the number of excellent restaurants he has taken me to. Well, enough of the idle banter, let's get down to the more serious stuff. Roberto, born and raised in Verona and a passionate lover of improvised music (to such an extent that he took part in the organisation of the Verona Jazz Festival) is in the fourth decade of his life (and is often heard to say that he would like to remain there for a very long time) and can boast having collaborated with a very worthy set of musicians who play music without frontiers. In recent years he has involved high calibre people such as Tim Berne, Bobby Previte, Elliot Sharp, Fred Frith, Ernst Rejiseger, Trilok Gurtu, Franco D'Andrea in unimaginable projects, where the love for spontaneous creation and for electronic music has often been coupled with reminiscences of the formative years, unpredictably influenced by the ecumenical rock of King Crimson, the blues rock of Cream and Led Zeppelin, of Pink Floyd: visionaries of Ummagumma. The unison of these great musicians of the British music scene was extremely influential thanks also to the long lived love affair with Ornette Coleman. Other sources of inspiration have become Golden Palominos, Massacre, Henry Kaiser (with the help of whom Roberto Zorzi has deepened his knowledge of the creative use of digital effects with the guitar). As a member of the band NAD Niù Abdominaux Dangereux, Zorzi has participated in the recording of the album Ghosts. The album already showed mature signs of his poetry, which is in tune with the other members of the band and is emphasised by such guests as Sharp, Frith, Kaiser and Denardo Coleman. Zorzi has brought to the recording studio a very varied group of artists such as Franco D'Andrea, Albert Mangelsdorff, Trilok Gurtu, Ernst Rejiseger, Paolo Damiani and Roberto Ottaviano: The result being the album Similado. "Similado". "The Bang" dates back to 1990. This CD was recorded live during the festival held at Roccella Jonica by a group of artists including Berne, Previte, Mark Feldman, Herb Robertson, Percy Jones and Matteo Ederle. Despite the spontaneity of the event, one can appreciate the effort involved in reproducing the style of progressive rock reminiscent of the sixties: comparing this style with the style influenced by some of the best artists of the New York Music scene. Following this, we come across the experiences with LA1919, Chris Cutler, Charles Hayward and, once again and with much emphasis, Elliot Sharp. Having widely visited, not only the present but the future of the electric guitar, Roberto has had the excellent idea to take a look at the past too: he has rediscovered the pleasure of acoustics and the sublime roughness of the Delta Blues. All this without excluding from his acquaintances the likes of Paul Lovens, Steve Jansen (ex Japan), Chianura Bros, Gabbiani e Musci, the theatrical actress Elisabetta Fadini, Mike Cooper etc .. Roberto's most recent work finds him with his bosom buddy Henry Kaiser: they are half way between the city and the countryside in a sort of imaginary city outskirts. The landscape is no longer urban but not yet rural, both feelings are nevertheless represented and reprocessed with a very personal touch. What comes next? Up until now his itinerary has been so irregular and varied that it impossible to predict where we will next turn up. It's no use waiting for him or trying to hunt him down: when the time comes, he will track us down and surprise us..." ^ Hide Bio for Roberto Zorzi • Show Bio for Erdem Helvacioglu "Erdem Helvacıoğlu is one of the most renowned contemporary music composers of his generation in Turkey.
