"While the previous Garcia/Branche CD seemed also improvised to me, this five-person work is of the two the more improvised one. The quintet of players also like their sounds to be sustaining, placing bows on strings, but also motorized objects, buzzing electronics and such like, in order to create a vast mass of sounds that seem to closely tied together. It sounds really good, but sometimes also a bit too long, such as in the longest piece, 'The Unfathomable Yearning Of Carving The Void'. Sometimes, so it seems to me, things could have used a bit more editing, which would have brought just that extra bit of tension to the music. The way it sounds now, it seems that Garcia, who did the mix, wanted to use all of the sounds that were captured on tape. These sixty-one minutes could have been a stronger forty-five or less minutes, I think. But in terms of improvised music that sounds a bit different, a bit moodier and atmospheric, then this is absolutely the right place to be."-Fransde Waard, Vital Weekly
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Miguel A. Garcia "Miguel A. García has been active for over two decades and with a discography that exceeds ten albums (presenting which he has toured Europe, America and Asia, performing at no less than the Issue Project Room in New York, the National Arts Centre in Mexico City, the Ftarri in Tokyo, the DOM Cultural Center in Moscow, the Église Saint-Merry in Paris or the National Auditorium of Music in Madrid), is a reference in experimental music and sound art, both for his work as a composer and for his career in the electroacoustic improvisation scene. During his career, the artist from Bilbao has collaborated with names such as Fernando Carvalho, Francisco López, Francisco Meirino, Ibon RG, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Juan Carlos Blancas or Seijiro Murayama, as well as curating events and festivals such as the Zarata Fest, the Hotsetan at Azkuna Zentroa or the legendary and extinct Club Le Larraskito. An immaculate career, in short, to which this work before us is now added. A double album with which the Basque artist has managed to lucidly convey the vital moment in which he finds himself and give shape to this timeless and genuinely avant-garde artistic artefact, called "Littentula". Like a modern Prometheus but using as raw material the documentation of his own capture processes (both for timbre synthesis and for composition), in this new album García signs an intimate and attractive invitation to sublimation, through pieces that are abstract by nature and that display a brutal sensitivity. A stimulating challenge, which has been orchestrated with musician friends of the stature of Garazi Gorostiaga, Enrike Hurtado and Garazi Navas in mind, who have turned his scores into a major work that transcends genres and is divided into two twin volumes, united by a new artificial beauty conceived from the genes of the old world. In the first album of "Littentula", García acts as the creator of an authentic sound stage, where the transmuted organic takes us back to the cycle of regeneration of nature. The four tracks that make up the album are developed from an intriguing metric of the beats, which manages to stimulate and expand our perception of the hidden face of the apparent. In the second, this pre-conscious logic ends up deriving into a kind of slow motion convulsion, a deafened, veiled, latent and strangely intense spasm, through which we come to intuit that the dawn and the dusk are manifested in the object of creation. A beautiful game of mirrors, with which Miguel A. García presents before us the most essential intrinsic double opposite: Life." ^ Hide Bio for Miguel A. Garcia • Show Bio for Sebastien Branche "Sébastien plays soprano, tenor and C-melody saxophones. He got started with improvisation through workshops with musicians coming from contemporary jazz or improvised music. Interested in perceptive phenomenons, he works mainly with sound as a material, describing himself as a "sound crafter" for an audience to listen to. His interests also extends to body and space, as he regularly confronts his practice to contemporary dance. He plays in the saxophone duet Relentless, in duet with viola player Cyprien Busolini or electronics musician Miguel A. Garcia, in large orchestra with IMO, and regularly meets other artists, either for private sessions or performances. He also works on solo performances with tenor sax on a stand and light electronics (Lignes) or soprano saxophone and water (saxopH2One). He has played around Europe in various venues and festivals, for concerts, dance performances or soundwalks. Sébastien taught Mathematics in high school and also gave a workshop about soundscapes there. From April 2015, he is taking a leave to devote his time to shiatsu and to his music." ^ Hide Bio for Sebastien Branche • Show Bio for Abdul Moimeme "Abdul Moimême was born in Lisbon, in 1959, moving at an early age to New Mexico and later to Dublin, Ireland. He began studying the guitar at the age of 11, studying under various private teachers, in Madrid, Spain. In 1979 he moved to Boston to study architecture, finally completing his degree at the University of Lisbon. In the 90's he began studying the tenor saxophone with Patrick Brennan. In this period he became actively involved with Lisbon's improvised and alternative rock scenes, performing frequently with the Variable Geometry Orchestra since it's creation in 2003, as well as with various other local projects. His main musical partners are from Lisbon and Porto, but he has also performed in public concerts with such artists as Gale Brand, George Haslam, Jon Raskin, Ken Filiano, Patrick Brennan, Steve Adams, and Wade Matthews. His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music. The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements. Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning. Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups. Music for Dance, Cinema, Video and Performance. Has created the record label Creative Sources Recordings in 1999, which mainly concentrates on releasing experimental and electro-acoustic music." ^ Hide Bio for Ernesto Rodrigues
