Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Steelpan trio album by Portuguese drummer Jorge Queijo, Japanese bassist Hiroki Chiba and Japanese steelpanist Yoshio Machida. Jorge Queijo came to tour in Japan in 2014 and 2015, and the trio set up to recorded in Tokyo. All the music is freely improvised.

Jorge Queijo plays drums and percussion in the Portuguese jazz music scene, and is active in the post-rock community. He also directs a unique Gamelan ensemble in Oporto, the Ensemble de Gamelao. His playing displays a sensitive expression of dynamic beats with a wide range of approaches.

Hiroki Chiba plays double bass using unique effects. The acoustic bass sound is processed to create a natural glitch surface in the background.

Yoshio Machida plays double tenor steelpans and gamelan (Java gender) on this album. His style is not like Caribbean, more like a style influenced from Asian music; Indian improvisation, Gamelan, Myanmar traditional music. The sound of this trio includes several aspects, some kinds of Jazz, world music, experimental, electronics or natural sounds.

The album could be described by the beautiful sound of bass arco, free and colorful drumming -- Gamelan meets Jazz, with the peaceful, melancholic melody of steelpan. This album is transparent, quiet and aesthetic, reminding of ECM artists like Marcin Wasilewski and Colin Vallon."-Amorfon

Artist Biographies

"Yoshio Machida (町田 良夫 Yoshio Machida?, born 1967 in Japan) is an experimental musician, a steelpanist, composer, and visual artist.

A member of ASCAP, Machida studied minimal art, music and film at the Tama Art University under Kuniharu Akiyama, Yoshiaki Touno, Sakumi Hagiwara and Kishio Suga. In the 1990s, Machida worked for an international cooperation in Asia and Africa.

Machida's first album Hypernatural (1999) had been featured with Brian Eno and Oval (band) on David Toop's article about Generative music. In 2001, Machida started to play improvised music by Steelpan with computer program Max/MSP. Machida has been invited to perform in ISEA2004, Sónar Tokyo, MaerzMusik and other venues. In 2004, Machida founded an experimental music label Amorfon. In 2007, Machida formed an electric Dub band miimo with tatsu and Norihide Saji. Machida also organized "Japan-Macedonia exchange art exhibition" and some workshops for children.

As a visual artist, Machida has produced Photobatik like Photogram technique using photographic paper. Photograms are produced by partial exposure and development of the entire photosensitive surface. Photobatik is "whole exposure and partial development." Machida has expanded his technique to overexposure of the photographic paper followed by only fixing the image, resulting in a pink image."
