Artist Biographies

"Heath Watts is a soprano saxophonist living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who specializes in free improvisation and free jazz. He has released three albums on Leo Records, Sensoria, Bright Yellow With Bass, and Breathe If You Can. Roeba Records released Philadelphia Company #1 in 2007 with Watts, drummer Dan Pell, and guitarist Barry Chabala. He has also self-released the album 2x with pianist Alexandra Swaney in 2007.

A soprano saxophone specialist, Heath includes Steve Lacy, John Coltrane, Evan Parker, David Liebman, and Lol Coxhill among his major influences. While learning to play the soprano saxophone, he relied heavily on the pedagogical materials of NEA Jazz Master David Liebman. Heath has had the opportunity to perform with David Liebman, Sam Newsome, Vinny Golia, Andrew Cyrille, Marc Helias Andrew Raffo Dewar, Jack Wright, François Grillot, Jay Rosen, Michael Szekely, and Matt Lavelle.

This web site will provide you the opportunity to hear and purchase tracks and albums from Heath's discography. In addition, you can follow his performance schedule, see concert footage, and see concert photos. There will also be a blog section where he will share his insights about practicing and taming the soprano saxophone and improvisation. Heath considers this site to be an opportunity to connect with those of you who enjoy his music and would like to know more about him and his work."

"Guitarist/improvisor Barry Chabala, born of the New Jersey bar scene, is influenced as much by classic rock as he is by modern classical, free improvisation and experimental music. The goal - to blend it all into a personal, creative voice. Barry has presented lectures on graphic scores & improvisation for Bowerbird of Philadelphia, performed numerous compositions from the Wandelweiser collective throughout the United States, and has recorded for labels including Confront, Gravity Wave, Another Timbre, Erstwhile and his own imprint Roeba Records."

Recommended & Related Releases:
Chabala, Barry / Lance Austin Olsen
Patterns For A Future Human
(Roeba)
Guitarist Barry Chabala merges musique concréte and improvisation, using recordings from painter and visual artist Lance Austin Olsen that Olsen recorded in his workshop while creating a series of large collaged and folded paintings--mutterings, physical sounds and other ephemera--which he sent to Chabala to use as a backdrop for these spaciously meditative guitar improvisations.
Pisaro / Chabala
Black, White, Red, Green, Blue (Voyelles) [CASSETTE]
(Winds Measure)
Guitarist Barry Chabala's interpretation of composer Pisaro's piece, instructing the performer on structure and pitch but allowing the precise timing and sound to the player; plus a reworking of Chabala's recording taking advantage of cassette hiss and sine tones.
Chabala / Jones / Martin / Mukarji / Nakamura
Unbalanced In (Unbalanced Out)
(Another Timbre)
Six musicians from around the world (Chabala / Jones / Martin / Mukarji / Nakamura) created this 50-minute track over the course of a year by collaborating and file-sharing online.

Kit & Caboodle
(Roeba)
The collaboration between guitarist Barry Chabala and Clara Byom on clarinets and accordion is expanded through Chabala's audio samples and Byom's use of objects, as they join in a trio with Albuquerque violinist Muni Kulasinghe, also performing on objects, for seven distinctive, spaciously paced improvisations recorded live at The Sitting Room in Albuquerque, NM.
Chabala, Barry / Clara Byom / David Forlano
Morning Music
(Roeba)
The second studio session for the freely improvising electroacoustic trio of Clara Byom, a contemporary classical and improvising clarinetist and accordionist, improvising guitarist Barry Chabala on acoustic, and multi-disciplinary artist David Forlano on electronics, in 11 succinct works to accompany a beautifully unconventional morning of open-ended conversations.

(un) natural
(Roeba)
The first meeting between two improvisers also versed in contemporary and avant music - guitarist Barry Chabala and clarinetist and accordionist Claray Byom - recording live at The Jean Cocteau Cinema, in Santa Fe, New Mexico as part of the Sandbox Music Series, for five freely improvised works that include radio, objects, iPhone and toys as part of their expansive dialogs.
Chabala, Barry / Ann Coman
In And Out Of Focus
(Roeba)
This album of improvised music was born out of mutual appreciation and admiration for the respective art forms of Ann Coman and experimental sound artist Barry Chabala, who performed original guitar improvisations while Coman intuitively created visual artworks from those performances, then reversing the process where Chabala interpreted Coman's art as visual scores.
Olsen, Lance Austin / Barry Chabala
A field of wildflowers for our lost souls
(Roeba)
Three connected journeys in drifting tones, unidentifiable and sometimes aberrant intersections and melodically abstract guitar work, composed by guitarist Lance Austin Olsen and performed with guitarist Barry Chabala, using layers of sound like an audio version of a colour field painting, emulating a field of seeds waiting for changing conditions to allow them to emerge.
Steerage
Entropy Is What The State Makes Of It
(Caduc)
An album of tones and tonal environments from Barry Chabala and A.F. Jones, using guitars and effects to create slowly moving tones punctuated with unusual utterances of unknown origin; rich and curiously non-specific sound that lives in the back- and foreground.
Pisaro / Chabala
Black, White, Red, Green, Blue (Voyelles) [2 CDs COLOR EDITION]
(Winds Measure Recordings)
Limited color edition of guitarist Barry Chabala's interpretation of composer Pisaro's piece, instructing the performer on structure and pitch but allowing the precise timing and sound to the player; plus a reworking of Chabala's recording taking advantage of cassette hiss and sine tones.
