"The first EP from punk/pop/experiment the racing pisshorses.

Started three weeks after Kurt Cobain left for other realms, the racing pisshorses started making noise in the small Illinois town of Washburn.

Background on our first EP:

After Kurt Cobain's passing, Ryan & JJ really got into mail order punk and indie records - first through Sub Pop. Living far from a record store and not old enough to drive, they conjured up records and CDs from the mail like Eric's Trip, Meat Puppets II, and Sebadoh. It turns out that 1994 was the lowest selling record year since they were introduced in the twenties. Well, we bought em up because they were cheap and fun (back then vinyl was punk because it was cheaper than CDs).

So we decided we should make a record. We took the lawn-mowing, can-collecting on a tandem bicycle, odd-job route to pay for our record pressing and studio recording. J.J.'s aunt lived out in the suburbs of Seattle, and where else should you go but Seattle to make a record? So we took the Amtrak train out there in July of 1995 with our guitar and bass, tiny amp and SupraDistortion pedal and Aunt Coco found us a studio in a strip mall and a rented drum set for Ryan to rock out on.

In just less than 3 hours, we set up our equipment, did a sound check, and recorded 5 tracks to an 8-track reel-to-reel, all live. According to the video evidence, Bob's Knob took four takes, K.D. Help Me two, and the other three tracks were all in one take.

The first three tracks fit on a 7" at 45 rpm (didn't have enough $$$ for a 33 1/3 7"). We planned Catalog Rhythm and Blue Daisies as our 2nd 7" but we couldn't get the $$$ together to make another record, switching to tapes for our next couple releases. For whatever reason, we never released either of those tracks. So here they are released to the public for the very first time, 30 years late!

We had a record release party on October 8th, 1995:

"On October 8, 1995, five brave souls joined the growing movement toward using SPAM as an artform. They participated in the first SPAM Carving contest held in the northern town of Washburn, IL. This contest was part of the festivities at the record release party for The Racing Pi**horses." - Jadon Peck, writing in The Voice newspaper in Springfield, IL"

Artist Biographies

"A dynamic yet meditative sitar player, J.J. Gregg performs improvised and pre-composed music. With over a decade of hands-on training in India, J.J. immerses western experimental and jazz music into the traditional world of the sitar. He has performed on the sitar in India, Japan, Thailand, and throughout the U.S.

Born and raised in rural Illinois, J.J. spent his teenage years performing and recording experimental rock music. In the year 2000, J.J. moved to Pune, Maharashtra, India to attend a study abroad program and met internationally renowned sitar player Ustad Usman Khan. For the past twenty-one years, J.J. has studied sitar and South Asian Classical Music under Khan's guidance at Naad Mandir in Pune, India. He returned to India seven more times to study with Khan, most recently in December 2018.

In 2016 J.J. Gregg teamed up with dancer Peter de Grasse to create 'Malkauns Meditation,' a collaborative performance based on improvisation in contemporary dance and South Asian Classical Music. The piece premiered at Whitman College in 2017, and they performed together in 2018 at both the Seattle International Dance Festival's 'Art on the Fly' and the UNESCO affiliated World Dance Congress in Mumbai, India.

Just released in August 2022, JJ teams up with tabla player Pavan Kanekal on the concept album 're-cycling'. Recent solo sitar albums include, 'in delicate balance,' in 2020 and 'opening up,' released in April 2018. In December 2021, J.J. Gregg and poet Sherman released their collaboration 'Hell might be a place,' which combines poetry, sitar, and improvisational percussion and hearkens back to J.J.'s many years as an experimental rocker and recording artist.

J.J. Gregg lives in Salem, Oregon where he teaches private and group sitar lessons. In addition to his years of study at Naad Mandir in India, J.J. Gregg holds a BA in Mathematical Economics from Colorado College and a Masters of Education from University of Illinois at Chicago. In addition to performing and teaching, J.J. continues to increase productivity in his organic garlic patch and front yard garden with the help of his curious (and hungry) toddler."
