Recorded at JB Productions, near Seattle, Washington, in 1995, by Jim Bachman.
Started three weeks after Kurt Cobain left for other realms, the racing pisshorses started making noise in the small Illinois town of Washburn.
Background on our first EP:
After Kurt Cobain's passing, Ryan & JJ really got into mail order punk and indie records - first through Sub Pop. Living far from a record store and not old enough to drive, they conjured up records and CDs from the mail like Eric's Trip, Meat Puppets II, and Sebadoh. It turns out that 1994 was the lowest selling record year since they were introduced in the twenties. Well, we bought em up because they were cheap and fun (back then vinyl was punk because it was cheaper than CDs).
So we decided we should make a record. We took the lawn-mowing, can-collecting on a tandem bicycle, odd-job route to pay for our record pressing and studio recording. J.J.'s aunt lived out in the suburbs of Seattle, and where else should you go but Seattle to make a record? So we took the Amtrak train out there in July of 1995 with our guitar and bass, tiny amp and SupraDistortion pedal and Aunt Coco found us a studio in a strip mall and a rented drum set for Ryan to rock out on.
In just less than 3 hours, we set up our equipment, did a sound check, and recorded 5 tracks to an 8-track reel-to-reel, all live. According to the video evidence, Bob's Knob took four takes, K.D. Help Me two, and the other three tracks were all in one take.
The first three tracks fit on a 7" at 45 rpm (didn't have enough $$$ for a 33 1/3 7"). We planned Catalog Rhythm and Blue Daisies as our 2nd 7" but we couldn't get the $$$ together to make another record, switching to tapes for our next couple releases. For whatever reason, we never released either of those tracks. So here they are released to the public for the very first time, 30 years late!
We had a record release party on October 8th, 1995:
"On October 8, 1995, five brave souls joined the growing movement toward using SPAM as an artform. They participated in the first SPAM Carving contest held in the northern town of Washburn, IL. This contest was part of the festivities at the record release party for The Racing Pi**horses." - Jadon Peck, writing in The Voice newspaper in Springfield, IL"
