Martin Küchen's Angles returns as an 11-piece — two trumpets, expanded reeds, vibraphone and amplified violin, Fender Rhodes/synth, and a three-drummer engine — lifting songful, anthemic themes into free, melody-rich interplay and propulsive grooves, the ensemble shifting from playful exchanges to surging peaks as its close-knit rapport balances warmth, bite, and momentum.

"Almost two decades have passed since Martin Kuchen, one of the brightest figures in European improvised music, founded the band Angles. Over the years, the band has evolved in terms of its membership and personnel. The Portuguese label Clean Feed has released the vast majority of the group's albums. Now it is time for the latest incarnation of Angles, this time Angles 11, featuring musicians from the core line-up and the oldest companions of musical journeys, as well as 'fresh blood'. Those we are beginning to talk about, those who may be the future of the improvised scene on the Old Continent, such as the wonderful Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva. Now it is also time for the legendary formation to appear in our label's catalogue. Take this music and tell them that this is the sound of freedom!"-Fundacja Sluchaj
Short history of Angles (in its many forms)
Swedish saxophonist Martin Küchen launched Angles as a small unit in the mid-2000s; the first widely released statement was the sextet album Every Woman Is a Tree (Clean Feed, 2008), whose melodic, politically charged themes set the template for the project. Core voices then and since have included Johan Berthling, Kjell Nordeson, Magnus Broo, Mats Äleklint and Mattias Ståhl.
The band quickly expanded and morphed: Angles 8 delivered the live set By Way of Deception (recorded 2011; issued 2012), and Angles 9 became a flagship lineup with albums like Injuries (2014), Disappeared Behind the Sun (2017) and Beyond Us (2019), marrying singable, hymn-like lines to danceable, communal grooves with a clear protest streak.
Küchen has also fielded Angles 10/9 (the vinyl set Today Is Better Than Tomorrow, 2020) and revived other sizes as needed, keeping the repertoire elastic while retaining the project's anthemic, Liberation-Music-Orchestra-meets-Brotherhood-of-Breath energy. The newest chapter is Angles 11 on Fundacja Słuchaj!, featuring long-time collaborators alongside newer voices (e.g., Susana Santos Silva) on Tell Them It's the Sound of Freedom (2025).
