   Jazz & Improvisation

Alcorn, Susan / Leila Bordreuil / Ingrid Laubrock: Bird Meets Wire
(Relative Pitch)

An unusual grouping of improvisers--pedal steel guitarist Susan Alcorn, cellist Leila Bordreuil, who's experimental approach to the instrument has her labeled as a "noise cellist", and saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock on tenor & soprano--in a collective album of implicitly lyrical, embraceable yet experimentally investigative, unruffled free improvisation.

Ali, Sean: A Blink in the Sun
(Neither/Nor Records)

NY double bassist Sean Ali presents an engrossing journey in seven pieces that depict an inner journey through tone, technique and words, using the double bass to create deep sonic environments through interactively playing and layering, using extended approaches that support and contrast his narration; a compelling and descriptive observation on the nature of self.
