Nearly every day for a year, Lucio Capece and Katie Porter met over the internet to commune about music; talking, playing and recording. This disc contains the outcome of their meetings in two minimal but rich compositions for bass and contrabass clarinets. Both pieces are characterized by held tones which often set up throbbing cross-waves of rippling overtones. The main difference between the two compositions is their time feel. "Phase To Phase 1" expands and contracts from baited waiting to long moments of sped-up breathing; from short expulsions to long held tones which set up gorgeous harmonic clouds. There's a lot of grain in the sound, rough edges to their conjunction, and the rare extraneous sounds (exhalations, rustles and other movement), just add to the overall sheen. Toward the end of this piece the chords become almost monstrous in their combined force, creating near-seismic vibrations. With headphones at high volume, this'll make your brain float.
"Phase To Phase 2" in contrast is more strictly timed, the chordal pulse much more regularly set. Are they counting? Using a stopwatch? Or perhaps just watching each other closely. Whichever their method, the result is of heavy duoliths set at regular intervals, all of roughly the same duration and weight. The grain is still there, perhaps in larger chunks now, and the trailing edges of their chords sometimes have an electronic sounding grit. An occasional edit is discernable by the dropping away of the room tone between pulses, making me believe that some of this may've been assembled after the fact, which nevertheless doesn't detract from a marvelous listening experience.
