Otomo Yoshihide / Ozeki Mikito / Mats Gustafsson: With Records (Doubtmusic)

The trio of Otomo Yoshihide, Ozeki Mikito and Mats Gustafsson, coming together for this brief, limited edition CD, exists more as a continuum than a unit. The 17-minute disc has as its genesis a solo saxophone recording entitled "It's All About" by Mats Gustafsson. Ozeki Mikito then made a "cutout," according to the label's description, of the recording presumably a sort of dicing and reconfiguring of the vinyl la Christian Marclay. Finally, then, Otomo Yoshihide scratched his way through the reconstituted record, making a scattershot collage that will be familiar to listeners of his turntable work.

If seen as saxophone versus turntable, the latter clearly wins. The squeals of reeds are disrupted, upended and buried in the midst of scratches, pops, silence and dramatic stereo pans. With abrupt shifts, it comes off as brutal, cartoonish, visceral, animalistic, disruptive and exhausting. It's an action packed quarter hour, resolving with 30 seconds of punctuated surface noise against an isolated, metallic cry, an exciting meditation on the vagaries of noise.
