Rhodri Davies: Telyn Wrachiod (Amgen)

Born in Wales in 1971, musician and composer Rhodri Daies began playing harp at the age of seven and never looked back. In the late '90s, Davies was a member of the trio IST alongside bassist Simon H. Fell and multi-instrumentalist Mark Wastell, being associated with the reductionist school of improvisation, also known as New London Silence.

The variety and versatility of Davies' work since the millennium speak volumes about the esteem in which he is held by other musicians. He has collaborated with such respected musicians as Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, John Butcher...He has featured on many recordings with musicians who range from Charlotte Church to Apartment House (the latter often featuring his sister Angharad, on violin). His performance "Cut and Run" involved cutting and burning the strings of a concert pedal harp and then restringing the harp...

In complete contrast to such activities, are the first ten albums that have so far been released on Davies' Amgem label. The label's first release, AMGEN 001, was Telyn Rown recorded in January 2020 and released that year. The label's releases are instantly recognizable by their attractive graphics, not least in the (now sold out) eight-disc box set — nothing to worry about as all the label's releases are still available. Telyn Wrachiod was recorded in August 2023 and is the equal of any other Amgen release. In truth, it is difficult to single out one album from the label's catalogue of ten; they all deserve to be heard repeatedly and savoured.
